Account of Soul Beach Festival from concert goer
Here is a real account of SBF May 29, 2005. Let's guess about the timeline from this.
6:00 head out to the venue--it's a beach concert, general admission so we get there early so we be in spittin' distance of lauryn. mission accomplished. we stand in the sand through
7:00 - 7:10 host doug e. fresh doing his thang (all lovers of true hip-hop would have been SO HYPE--the dj was off the chain with old school hip-hop and doug e. was fabulous)
7:30 so doug e. introduced the first act, Omega--local Arubian group--they're aight but let's get to lauryn.
8:00 doug e.'s back doing his thing for about 45 minutes cause boyz II men's plane is late--doug e. is rippin it up...
8:45 boyz II men arrive and do their set--they do well but have just kinda fallen off--the sound man wasn't on point either so that may have had something to do with it. alright,
9:45 4 hours later,(she probably arrived an hour early to be in the front) been standing in the sand for 4 hours straight with my fat, swollen ankle, but it's cool cause the moment has finally arrived..."ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the incomparable Lauryn Hill"...............(they had trouble getting Lauryn to the stage because of a crowd of friends and family that upset her).
10:15 Lauryn 1. does not greet the crowd and appears to have attitude from jump 2. does 3 acoustic songs no one has ever heard of 3. responds to a " we love you lauryn" from the crowd with a very dry "i'm glad to hear that". 4. does a (yes, as in 1/uno/one/single) song from the miseducation album 5. says "thanks for having me aruba" and bouces 5. gets shown backstage on the jumbotron leaning on a post humming as the crowd chants "lauryn, lauryn" in a tone that is very much "bring your ass back out here".
11:00 6. after a prod from Wyclef comes back on stage with him and praz and does a fugees number remixed with another song with just her and clef 7.
11:20 bounces again...for real this time. so the crowd is in a state of shock like this sh*t can't be for real, right? doug e. comes back out beggin us not to shoot the messenger but lettin us know that it really is over. the crowd is booing and highly upset. doug e. understands but says sometimes it just is the way it is. you are right doug e., sometimes it is....damn!
