Peterson Will Turn Himself In to Police on Gun Charge
BOLINGBROOK, Ill. — DEVELOPING STORY:
A judge has issued an arrest warrant for Drew Peterson, the prime suspect in the disappearance of his fourth wife Stacy, on a weapons charge.
Peterson's publicist said Wednesday that the former Bolingbrook, Ill., police sergeant would turn himself in to Illinois State Police on that gun charge.
One of the guns authorities seized in their investigation into Stacy Peterson's disappearance is smaller than allowed by Illinois law, according to publicist Glenn Selig.
Peterson claimed he legally owned the weapon as an officer, and the law only pertains to civilians.
Stacy Peterson has been missing since October. Drew Peterson has maintained that he had nothing to do with her disappearance, saying she ran off with another man and is in hiding.
Police are also investigating the death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio. She was found dead in a bathtub in 2004. Her death was initially ruled an accident.
After Stacy Peterson disappeared, Savio's body was exhumed and an autopsy determined she was the victim of a homicide.

Drew Peterson surrenders on gun rap
BOLINGBROOK, Illinois (AP) -- Months after naming a former suburban Illinois police sergeant as a suspect in his wife's disappearance, authorities issued a warrant Wednesday for his arrest on an unrelated weapons charge, officials said.
Drew Peterson turned himself in shortly after the warrant was issued.
The gun, a semiautomatic assault rifle, was one of 11 seized during a search of Peterson's home November 1, shortly after Stacy Peterson disappeared in late October, said his attorney, Joel Brodsky. He said police claim the rifle barrel was too short under Illinois law.
Brodsky said Peterson was still a police officer when the weapon was seized and officers are exempt from the length provision of the law. Peterson retired from the force after Stacy Peterson's disappearance.
Police are also investigating the death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio. She was found dead in a bathtub in 2004. Her death was initially ruled an accident.
After Stacy Peterson disappeared, Savio's body was exhumed and an autopsy determined she was the victim of a homicide.
The investigation into Stacy Peterson's disappearance has drawn worldwide media attention. Authorities have said they believe she is dead, and extensive searches have been conducted in forests, marshes, lakes and other areas in suburban Chicago.
The felony gun charge, unlawful use of a weapon, carries a penalty of up to five years in prison. Peterson was expected to post 10 percent of a $75,000 bond to be released, authorities said.
Peterson has been trying for months to persuade a judge to order the Illinois State Police to return the seized weapons. The judge already ordered police to return Peterson's vehicles and other belongings.
A court hearing was scheduled for Thursday on a proposal from Brodsky that ownership of the guns be transferred from Peterson to his adult son.

This kind of thing happens in a lot of cities. If the police are really gunning for someone, they will find a way to get that person in jail on some trumped up charge.
If Jason Young had stayed in the town he was living in, I am certain the police would be hounding him as well. One little slipup would be all it took.

I know. I am from there and have family with a lot of friends in law enforcement and politics... And it is true that in the central part of Illinois almost none of the wife-beating cops are arrested or charged.

Did any of you see Greta last night?? Drew apparently didn't like the reporter outside his house talking about him, so he kept setting his car alarms off. His neighbor said she would call the cops if she needed to in order to stop it if it continued.

Judge Orders Authorities Turn Over Guns to Drew Peterson
Thursday, May 22, 2008
JOLIET, Ill. — Former Bolingbrook Police Sgt. Drew Peterson won a victory in court today a day after he was bailed out of jail on a weapons charge.
A Will County judge ruled Peterson can transfer ownership of several guns seized at his house to an adult son and that authorities must give them to the son.
Peterson is a suspect in the October disappearance of his wife, Stacy. For months he has been trying to force the Illinois State Police to return weapons seized from his house as part of the investigation into the disappearance.
He was charged with unlawful use of a weapon after authorities determined one of the guns taken has a barrel that's too short under Illinois law.
Peterson maintains he could have the weapon because he used it as part of his duties as a police officer.

IMO, no one should own a gun like the one Peterson had. I don't care if they are cops or not, a gun like that is not for hunting anything but humans.

Photo of John Travolta Signing Autograph for Drew Peterson Could Be Evidence in Weapons Case
Thursday, May 29, 2008
A photograph of actor John Travolta signing an autograph for Drew Peterson, the prime suspect in fourth wife Stacy's disappearance, could end up being evidence in the weapons case brought against him by police.
Peterson was arrested last week on a gun violation charge for owning and using an assault rifle with a barrel shorter than required by state law.
The 54-year-old former Bolingbrook, Ill., police officer has contended that he used the gun on the job, and the law applies only to civilians.
On Thursday, his attorney released a photo of Peterson carrying the weapon in question as Travolta signed an autograph for him. Peterson had been assigned to protect the star while he was shooting the movie "Battlefield Earth."
"This photo should convince the state police that they've made a mistake with these charges," Joel A. Brodsky, Peterson's criminal defense attorney, said in a press release he circulated with the photo on Thursday.
Brodsky said the picture proves that his client did use the assault rifle while he was on duty as a sergeant.
He joked that if the photo doesn't persuade police on its own, "we might need to subpoena Mr. Travolta when this case goes to court."
A call to Travolta's agent was not immediately returned.
Illinois State Police have charged Peterson with a class 3 felony gun charge. He turned himself in on May 21, was booked and then was released on bail.
Last week, a judge ordered authorities to return eight of the 11 guns they confiscated from Peterson during their investigation. The judge said Peterson had the right to transfer ownership of the weapons to his son.
Peterson faces up to five years in jail if he is convicted of unlawful use of a weapon. His next court date is May 30.
Stacy Peterson, 23, was reported missing on Oct. 29, 2007, after she failed to show up at a friend's house and her family couldn't reach her. Drew Peterson said he last spoke to her the previous night. He has maintained that he had nothing to do with her disappearance, saying she ran off with another man and is in hiding.
Authorities have said they believe Stacy Peterson was the victim of a homicide, and her husband remains the sole suspect.
Police are also investigating the death of Peterson's third wife, 40-year-old Kathleen Savio. She was found dead in a dry bathtub in 2004. Her death was initially ruled an accident, but when Stacy Peterson disappeared, Savio's body was exhumed. An additional autopsy determined she was the victim of a homicide.
Documents show that Savio had filed for an emergency order of protection from Peterson, writing in the file that "he wants me dead and if he has to he will burn the house down just to shut me up."
Peterson retired from the police force after his fourth wife vanished.
This photo shows actor John Travolta signing an autograph for Drew Peterson, left, who had been assigned to protect him.
