I could never be that strict, since animal byproducts are found in many commercial foods such as cereal, bread, etc. that are used as binding agents.
Many people that aren't vegans or vegetarians may also not realize that rennet is an enzyme found in the stomach of calves, young goats, and lambs that's used in cheese-making.
And wine drinkers may not realize that some wine has blood in it. It's used as a clarifier.

Wineries might use animal-derived products as finings. To remove proteins, yeasts, and other organic particles which are in suspension during the making of the wine, a fining agent is added to the top of the vat. As it sinks down, the particles adhere to the agent, and are carried out of suspension. None of the fining agent remains in the finished product sold in the bottle, and not all wines are fined.
Examples of animal products used as finings are gelatin, isinglass, chitosan, casein and egg albumen. Bull's blood is also used in some Mediterranean countries but is not allowed in the U.S. or France.
As an alternative to the animal products Bentonite, a natural, inert clay powder, can be used to clarify the wine. There are even some very patient vintners who let the wine's sediments settle naturally.
Winemakers are not required to put on their label which clarifier is used, since it is removed from the final product.

yes, they are so strict they read every label. if it has one thing that is not 100 percent in line with strict vegan they do not eat it. the book tells of wine and what kind is ok.
when they come over to visit i do not even buy the grocery for them. they go to store and stock up. lots of foods i do not recognize-lol. they do look healthy and i am the one with diabetes , so i guess i have no room to say its not good stilll i can not eat most of their choices as it makes me gag- i can not eat the things the book says as i hate most green veggies like spinach, brocolli and humus. yet, the book does make you gag too when you read how meat is eventually a steak!

I don't blame you for not doing the grocery shopping when they visit, they should be able to get thru the store much quicker since they are used to buying what they trust.
Can I ask if your son was a vegan before he married?
I guess they wouldn't appreciate any gifts like down comforters or wool blankets either, lol.
I hope if a family member of mine was a vegan that they were happy and healthy, but a few that are in the public eye seem hateful towards others that aren't choosing that lifestyle.
One of the cable news anchors this morning was saying he no longer enjoys eating KFC since they took out the transfats...he said "I know it's bad for me, but now it doesn't taste any good so I don't plan to eat there any more". Guess that's one way the govt can make people quit what's supposed to be "bad" for them.

I really do not think they pick their comforters based on it but you never know-lol. thats a good point as i am sure they consider all since they are so strict about everything. they were not vegans till about 2 years ago. they married and ate meat but not red meat. now none. i do sometimes get tired of hearing about how unhealthy i eat but they are concerned about me and my own health. i recently was diagnosed with diabetes so i did change somethings. i now know why i am tired when blood sugar plunges or goes up.
he was mad at my sarcasm- as i am a smart alec- and i said i had fried calamari one day. he said mom--your going to die !! he said i love you and dont you want to be around to live? i said well when i die just put some raw squid on my body. creamate me and i will go to heaven with fried calamari!! omg--he was so ticked at me i think he said he would hang up! yeah i can be the one to drive him crazy with my humor.my daughter is healthy too . fussy too about food . they did not get it from me or their dad. maybe they are smarter than us. i love my kids and know they care about me and thats why they try to help.yet i like primerib-lol

While I was fixing breakfast awhile ago and packing a lunch for my husband I got to thinking about those "evangelical vegans" and just how far they would take their non-use of animal products.
I mean, if they choose to eat organic grown food, do they buy from growers that don't use any animal fertilizer?
I would think that most fertilizer comes from farms where chicken or cattle are raised for human consumption and the farmers in turn would sell their poop for use on crops...in a sense then those vegans would still be supporting the use of livestock for consumption.
About your diabetes, I thought it was fine for diabetics to have protein in their diets. (I should know this, as DH is Type II and he was allowed to increase his protein).
I think you can still make healthy food choices while still eating meat (and that includes fish/seafood too!)
It's good tho you can joke about it with your kids, sometimes people get on a mission to convert others to whatever they are really psyched about.
However, if I had to be the one to kill and slaughter my food, then nope, I know I couldn't do that.
