Goodbye My Gentle Giant..mr. mitts.
Goodbye my love..we had 18 years together, and finally tonight I had to let you go.
You were the rock of the cat clan, you loved and cared for the others, the strangers, the injured, the babies that arrived. You cuddled and cared and were with me through everything.
Tonight, i held you for the last time, while you took your last breaths and finally ended your suffering. I never thought you would go before butterscotch, or that it would happen so fast. The doctor and I cuddled you..both talking to you in your final moments..you went so peacefully.
Thank you for the 18 years of unconditional love. All of us will miss you especially Miss Punkin. She is already looking for you.
My black and white giant..who had the heart full of love for all people and animals.

Joy thank you for posting the pic of Mitts .. he truly was my gentle giant..i remember when Matilda (the raccoon) first saw him when she came around with her babies..and she watched him and went and laid down in the grass..essentially saying "this must be a funny raccoon sent to babysit so i can rest"
Another memory of mine..i was in university and my parents had flown back from Nigeria (on assignment there) and stayed at the house.. they bought one of those HUGE countertop Brita water filters. Well they were out and i was on the phone in the kitchen and suddenly heard a big crash.
Curious mittsy had gotten up on the counter and pushed the filter and its minimum 50 lbs of water right off !!! water everywhere...my mother took it back and said it must have been cracked she couldnt believe that a cat could push that much weight off a counter unless it had leaked..but he did, i was in the kitchen all morning. He was a giant as a juvenile..not fat, but his vet at the time kept saying "my god look at the head on him".
he found a mole at the cottage one year..he was about 2. I am a "save the mouse" type, and went over to see what he was staring at. This blind mole..was digging down into the dirt and mitts licked him!!!! no paw, no claw. just curious.. i never saw him go after a mouse, a chipmunk, a mole or a bird. He just liked living things.

VC - I am so sorry about Mittsy. I know that you will miss him terribly; but you will have many beautiful memories to cherish forever, too. I have a big guy, too; my heart is too filled with thoughts for what you must be feeling, I'll just post this:

VC I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Animals are such a wealth of love & companionship, you will miss Mr. Mitts for a long time. You do have the blessings of 18years and the memories will sustain you as you frolic with your other babies.

thanks guys. right now to be honest, not sure how to go on. spent most of the day in bed. everything has lost its importance now. Im cuddling the others, but without mittsy, the rest of my days will be just to look after them. i realize he is just a pet, and i have lost other pets before but he was really my child and his loss was so fast, and so unexpected.

VC, I am so sorry for the loss of your dear little giant furbaby. I have cats, also, and I love my cats more than many people I know. I also know the feeling of having that one special cat who has connected to your heart and soul. I had two Siamese boys that I raised from the time they were two weeks old, and they thought I was their mother. We were so attached, and I lost both of them to some strange cat disease about two years ago.
A year ago, one of my daughters who is away at college, brought me her cat, who is a tuxedo cat, and huge. This cat is so smart he is scary. He locked me out of my own house two weeks ago, by somehow engaging the dead bolt on the back door. Wouldn't let me back in! He can let himself out the front door if the screen is not locked. I have to put him in his cat carrier at night cause he is too restless to sleep with me, and so he stands outside my bedroom door and rattles the doorknob and meows...I couldn't find him a few nights ago, when I wanted to put him in the carrier...I happened to walk past the carrier...there he was, already tucked in for the night...

I'm so sorry about the loss of your cat VC. I've never had cats, but I know it has to be the same empty feeling as having to put a family dog to sleep. My thoughts are with you.
