Nacho
I have written a couple of times about my dog Bowser and knowing he will leave us too soon. This afternoon, fate decided to play a nasty trick on my family.
At about 5:45, our 10 month old lab mix darted out the front door behind my 2 daughters and ran straight into the road where she was struck by a van. Her head trauma was so severe she could not be saved. This was witnesed by my 12 and 10 year old girls.
Nacho came to us in January, an unwanted Christmas present that was being abused. I'll never understand why someone would get a puppy for a 2 year old and expect it never to knock the baby down or nip at him. After seeing Nacho thrown against a wall for barking and scaring the 2 year old, I brought her home that day.
We learned very quickly that Nacho had some dangerous behavior problems. She climbed the 5 foot fence to get out and she liked to chase cars. This mandated she become a house/leash dog. The only time she would stay in the yard was when the girls were outside, she loved to play on the trampoline with them.
Nacho bonded with my 10 year old, sleeping with her every night. She and Bowser were also great playmates. Our 3rd dog, Blu, at 7, was quite content at watching the youngsters wrestle.
Now, Nacho has gone to the Rainbow Bridge. She will meet Bear who has been there for 3 years and she will wait for Bowser who will soon follow. We are sad and we miss her a lot.
Life sucks sometimes.

castlerocklives, I am so-o-o sorry for your tragic loss. How nice that you and your family were able to give this dog love for a while. I'm sure you already have this poem since you mentioned the Rainbow Bridge, but I'll post it anyway.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Oh I am sooo soooo sorry CRL.
Poor Nacho. It sounds like she found you. She will have fun with Bear and they can yap about the good times and all of the fun times that they had with you and your family. I hope your daughters are doing okay CRL. I witnessed the same thing at a very early age.
I love the Rainbow Bridge story Sid. It is soo sooo sweet- just like our animal friends.
CRL- Take care sweetie. Give you and your daughters a big big Bear Hug...

Thank you everyone for your kind words, it really means a lot.
The Nacho nightmares have finally ended for the girls I hope. It took my 10 year old days to stop crying at bedtime because she had no one to sleep with. Bowser roamed the house for hours looking for his friend.
I, on the other hand, am still plagued by visions of my 12 year old kneeling in the street saying "Nacho, please don't die". It is probably the most heartbreaking thing I have ever seen. It was a nasty way for her to learn that Mom can't fix everything. They still blame themselves for letting her get out.
I can't bring myself to go looking for a puupy, my animals have always found me. I know in my heart another will come along that needs us, and we will need him/her. I loved that little doggy a lot, we all did.
Thanks again for being so kind and caring.

I'm very sorry crl. Maybe my old Elizabeth will be at the gate and give Nacho a hello.
It is difficult for children, sometimes it's the first experience with how rough life can be sometimes. Most of us can remember our very first pet and how we felt when they were gone. My prayers for your family!

I actually remember when my first little kitty had to be "put to sleep"....she had feline leukemia. Somebody took me to the lake to have a good time there, it was a summer day....and it was done while I was gone. I was heartsick. I kept the sneakers I wore that day for years afterwards, just for "sentimental reasons" I guess. Funny I remember that now, it was EONS ago.
CRL's story made me really cry. The loss of a pet is devastating.

Devastating is a good word for it SS. I've posted before about my old Elizabeth, she died 2 years ago when she was 18. I know I was lucky to have her for so long but I would give anything to have her back.
She really was my best friend through thick and thin. I have her ashes so that if I move I won't leave her behind.
