Walking and hiking

Does anyone else like to walk or hike?

My dog loves it, and I enjoy taking her out every day.

I like hearing other people describe their walking experiences, so please share them.

Thanks in advance.

I love walking, though I don't go too far. Smile I usually walk my neighborhood every night (unless it's bad weather). It's only about 3 miles... but, I enjoy it.

No pets, so I don't have any pets to walk with.

Three miles every day is fantastic, Ariana. It must be fun to walk around the neighborhood. Where I live, the streets are all so narrow it would be dangerous, so that's why I go to mountains or to the dog park.

I have a cross Great Dane-Boxer that I love him more than anything in this world. He is too energetic so everyday we have to go out 2 times: half an hour (in summer time, summer here is tooooo hot) or 45 min (winter time) in the morning, and 1 to 2 hours in the afternoon depends on the weather and no matter I am busy or tired or ....

He needs not only walking but running and playing with other dogs. so he should be without leash. Here in Dubai still dogs are not allowed in parks, but I am living in suburb of Dubai, Big Villas and nearly empty streets and big deserts and gulf fields around. (unfortunately, Dubai has no mountain at all)

In the afternoon, we walk and play long distances with some of his friends (sometimes 4-5 dogs).

The only thing that disturbs this peaceful experience to a real mess is when 4 big unleashed dogs see a cat!!! But thanks God none of them hurt any cat.

I am very fortunate in that I live on a farm in rural western Pennsylvania. We are the 5th generation here.

We own about 70 acres and I walk my own fields & woods. I try to walk every day for my health and take my dogs with me.
I encounter many different things when I walk, and out of an abundance of good sense I always carry a firearm. When things go bad in the country, they can be very bad.

There is a bear here that I have never seen- just his scat.
Have seen coyotes rarely.
I came upon a red fox not too long ago. I must have been down wind from him, because I was able to watch him for a long while before he knew I was there.
Most days I will see deer & wild turkeys.
I dread it when I see Mr. Skunk - I always give him plenty of room.
This year there have been quite a few red hawks in the area.
I hate to see a snake. In fact I hate them so much, that I will avoid the woods in the warmer weather. The fields are beautiful at all times of the year. Many different things grow here.
Here are some pics I have shared before of where I walk.

Riko when we went to find a Christmas tree.

The woods. We are part of a Stewardship Forrest Program and our woods are important to us. We heat our home with wood - a renewable resource

Sharzad, that great dane-boxer must be gorgeous, and I'm glad you get him lots of exercise.

Veme, thanks for the spectacular photos. Is that near the Pocono mountains?

Here in New Mexico, I've seen some coyotes, around dusk, and they are intriguing creatures. Also, we have these jackrabbits out here that are really big. Angelina loves chasing after them and they always elude her. There are huge crows, and sometimes I see hawks and owls. I helped rescue an owl that had been attacked by a hawk, there's a sanctuary that nursed it back to health. I've seen some bald eagles, and am glad they have made a comeback and are no longer endangered species. I've seen two brown bears and let them go on their way. The strangest and most neurotic animal I ever see is human beings.

I'll have to agree with that! Cool

I am in western Pennsylvania - almost to Ohio. It is considered geographical & cultural Appalachia.

Sadly, where I am is now becoming developed; the suburbs are headed this way.
IMHO it is a sin that perfectly good farm ground is being eaten up by ugly, expensive tract houses.

We are selling our farm/home & moving on because we can no longer live the way we choose. I don't care to live in the suburbs
– 125 years/ 5 generations in one place gone- poof.
I will miss this place.

It breaks my heart when I consider:
Where will all the wild animals go when we are gone?
In people's back yards?
Feeding out of trash cans? Bird feeders?
Road kill?
Very sad Crying or Very sad

Oh, bummer, Veme. As Joni Mitchell sang "they paved paradise and put up a parking lot." There are too many people, as far as I'm concerned. I still don't get why many go ga ga when someone has another child.

Riko is a great dog. and thanks for sharing the photos. Your woods are amazing. I always had a dream to be in a place like that.

Really so sad that this place cannot be the same in future.
I feel so unfortunate that I never could see wild animals in there own natural places.

I am not so intelligent to express delibrately my feelings. But I know what is the feeling of leaving what belongs to you, I went through all that.

Pax
Yes, as all mother sees their children, my Georgeo is gorgeous:) I try to send a pic soon. I feel sometimes that I like animals more than people.

I LOVE hiking in the mountains!! I mentioned in the Billy Blanks thread I have knee problems but love to jog anyway, so I have to be careful, but I ADORE longer, more strenuous hikes through the mountains. Ironically, it's going *downhill* that bothers me worse when my knee is acting up, going uphill is a piece of cake.

I also like long walks on the beach, and gentle walks around the lake at the park.

I plan to participate in some walks for Breast Cancer coming up- I have never done that before. There is a *30 mile one* coming up, holy cow! It's over 2 days and you don't have to finish it, they appreciate you even showing up to walk even a mile. I might try to do the whole thing, but having a toddler wears me out so I am just as likely to be found sleeping in that weekend. Embarassed

So I'd say yeah, I love to walk! I wish I had a dog to walk. You know....I am a stay at home mom for now, and I never thought of this before, but I could volunteer to walk dogs for people who work all day and their poor dogs are left at home alone.

Shahrzad, I truly hope that one day you will find a place with lots of wilderness, as it is so inspiring.

Dukeblue, dog walking is a great business. You can get exercise and earn some money, too. Where I live, there are a few people who do this and enjoy the freedom and extra money caring for people's dogs while they are away at work.

Veme, beutiful land. My family owns about 100 acres about a mile form here. It's always been in my family, so I always played in the woods whenever I went to Grandmas house. I hike there still. There is a creek and a field that has always been called Forky Deer (the creek forks off in two directions) where alot of deer live. I saw a 13 point buck there last fall. We also have peacocks there, coyotes and the usual creatures. Sice the land is mountains and valleys, its great for hiking and exploring and so pretty in the fall and the spring. I have two acres on this beautiful land to build on whenever I'm ready to settle in for good. Its amazing to be in such a beautiful & secluded place right outside of the city.

I love to walk, walk frequently. Weight bearing exercise is great for women my age to help avoid osteoporosis. We live in the core area (old, or as my daughter says "Urban Decay", just a mile and a half from the center of the city, in a bend of the river. The wildlife here is remarkable.
We have the usual songbirds plus orioles, great horned owls, small screech owls, herons, and egrets, and bald eagles winter here in a park about a mile away. They are magnificent to watch flying along the river. The neighborhood has possums, skunks, raccoons, gophers and moles, not to mention the squirrels that are attracted to the nuts from the four large black walnut trees next door. No dog at present, we just do not have the time we feel necessary to devote to a dog and it would not be fair to the dog. Dogs are part of the family, in my opinion.

What a beautiful area. It must be fantastic for hikes, horses, and just wandering around. Thanks for sharing the photo!

Yes, bald eagles are incredible creatures. They fly so high, and when they swoop down, they really build up speed. I'm so glad they've made a comeback. Definitely true about dogs, you need to have the time to spend with them, as they become part of the family.

I agree with Sapient. Really beautiful land and country. Some day I will figure out how to load and scan and put up digital photos to share some of my area. Don't hold your breath though, because I've been saying that for three years.

Ariana, I borrow my neighbor's Sheltie to take walks with. It's fun for both of us, he's inside an electric fenced yard all the time. If I ever had a dog it would be a Sheltie, he is so happy and full of energy. Laughing

I'm in the Ohio Valley, very similar land to the beautiful pictures Veme posted. I love it, couldn't live in a city if I had to.

This is my nearest neighbor, Lois, she's always late for coffee. Laughing

Nena, beautfiul sajuaro cactus photo. Have you been to the Desert Wildlife Museum? I have a friend in Tucson who is taking part in a hawk training program. His wife said it's cool as long as they don't have hawks in their back yard. Also, the Sajuaro National Park is really awesome, especially at sunset. Your photo captured the surreal beauty of these fascinating cacti.

Hisss, that's a great photo of the deer. Perhaps decaf or herbal tea is best for these high-strung creatures, lol.

In a little while, I'm going for a hike in the Sangre de Christo mountains with some friends and all of our dogs.

Hey Nena, one of my friends is from Germany. He just got back from the World Cup.
