The Dog Whisperer

I've seen a few people mention the television show The Dog Whisperer. It's on Animal Planet.

It's a great show.

I love how the dog whisperer (Cesar) works with the owner of a dog to help them understand that the owner should be the pack leader.

It is a great show. I have some wild dogs that follow me on my walks, had no idea I was being a pack leader until I started watching this show. Laughing

^ That's really neat. Dogs are such pack animals, and feel secure and comfortable when they know there is a pack leader.

There are some critics of Cesar's methods. I don't get it. I see messed up neurotic dogs and owners coming away less neurotic and messed up.

Seems like a good thing to me. Dogs happier. Dog owners happier.

he's on animal planet now? Do you know what days?

I first saw him on Oprah when he helped her with her neurotic cocker.

I think he is on the National Geographic Channel, but I don't know if it also runs elsewhere. It is on Friday nights, 8 pm EST I think? Reruns other times, maybe on other channels, too.

I love to watch the show. I think he is a magician and I think he loves the dogs. And the whoever does the music in the background has a wonderful sense of humor.

I'd like to catch the show sometimes. I've heard so much about him. My Dad watches it and recommends it very highly.

I don't have a dog but I've watched the show and really like it. My neighbor has a Sheltie that she got as a pup and they are really tuned in to each other.

It's a great show, even if you disagree with his methods. Which I don't, so maybe that's why I think it's great, lol.

Darnit, I can't remember what channel it's on. Definitely Friday nights. I have direct tv, and don't really notice the channels. It's either National Geographic or Animal Planet I think. I sound like Rainman....uhh channel 586?.....uh channel 492?.....uhhhhhh........

Apparently though, there is contorversy about his ways. I hope those posters will bring the links over.

I love to watch how the dog transforms behavior with Cesar. Like the dog who wouldn't let anyone, ever, in his owners bedroom. After about 30 seconds, Cesar was allowed in.

Nah. I've given up trying to change people's minds about it. I figure if the top animal behaviorists in the world can't convince them, I sure can't.

Dominance training has been around a lot longer than the tv show. In fact I was surprised to see a picture of the person who appeared on the television show because I had a useful import book from England on dog training (with the same title) that offered some of the same tips. There was even a picture of the author walking a pack of dogs that is remarkably similiar of one with the tv show person that is to be found on the net. I can't remember the author's name just now or I would post it.

One of the most useful tips I ever received from a trainer is a dominance trick. It involves spending time each day with my dog rolled over on and held down by my leg in a submission posture while I pet it and handle things like teeth and paws. For the first time I have dogs that let me clip their nails without acting like I am killing them and we are getting the tooth cleaning thing down pretty well.

I don't know much about it, but I've been reading up on it. I mean, what do you do with a dog the size of mine? He can hurt/injure me just being playful...just being himself. As as example, he comes over and tries to get in my lap while I'm sitting at the computer (lol). And has a mind of his own, especially during fireworks and thunderstorms...so...again, what does one do? Part of the Great Pyr "personality" is that they believe they know more...they were bred to take care of sheep/goats in the Pyrenees of France...that independent "I know what's best" attitude has not changed with domestication.

You don't try to dominate him and be the leader of the pack. Dogs actually know you aren't another dog. With dominance training, you're always at risk that your dog will decide it's his time to be leader and if it comes to a physical confrontation, you will lose. To them, forcing them into submission is just scaring them. It comes down to a small but distinct difference: do you want your dog to behave because life is good when he does, or because life is bad when he doesn't.

GP's are supposed to be independent. It's their job. Why would someone want to change that? Being independent doesn't need to mean bad manners, though. Most dogs want to please their owners, but they can't read your mind. You have to show them what you want. Does he know the basics, like 'sit' and 'down' and 'no'? A beginners training class can do wonders. Just make sure it doesn't involve prodding him, choking him or jerking him around. How old is yours? GPs stay puppified until they're 2 or 3.

Damn, you got me up on my hobbyhorse. Laughing
