Barbaro's Doc to try and save Erie Polar Bear/died
Barbaro's Surgeon Will Try To Save Erie Polar Bear
(KDKA/AP) ERIE The surgeon and other doctors that have worked to save the racehorse Barbaro will now try to save an Erie Zoo polar bear with a broken leg.
On Thursday, doctors who examined the 7-year-old bear Alcor thought he would have to be euthanized, because they didn't believe surgery could fix two broken bones just above his right paw.
But today, zoo officials said a team led by Barbaro surgeon Doctor Dean Richardson will try to fix the bear's leg at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center, where Barbaro was treated.
Barbaro, the Kentucky Derby winner, suffered life-threatening injuries when he broke three bones above and below his right rear ankle at the start of the Preakness in May.
The horse continues to recover from that surgery and laminitis, which is affecting his left rear hoof.

"Famous Surgeon to Operate on Erie Polar Bear
Alcor, the injured Erie Zoo`s polar bear, will be operated on next week by Chief Surgeon Dean Richardson of University of Pennsylvania`s New Bolton Center near Philadelphia. The polar bear is suffering from a shattered front right leg, which he injured while playing with his brother. Erie Zoo spokesman Scott Mitchell calls news of the upcoming surgery "a ray of hope." A Cleveland vet said Thursday surgery on the 800 pound polar bear would not be successful. Friday, another team of vets gave Mitchell a second opinion that favored surgery. Zoo workers will load Alcor into a specially-constructed steel crate for the trip, either on Sunday or Monday. Last month, Dr. Richardson successfully operated on Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro and saved the horse from his leg injury. "

thanks JMO
at least a bear doesnt have to deal with laminitis and should heal fine, if he is kept on cage rest for a few weeks and makes it thru the surgery.

Polar bear died after surgery.
The repair went fine, but he died as the anaesthesia wore off

From what I have heard from specialist vets regarding anasthesia in bears, dosage is based on lean body mass, not fat. It's very difficult to judge how much of the bear is lean, and polar bears are particularly sensitive to anesthesia (liver, maybe, in metabolizing the drugs).
