OT Sweetheart is in surgery :)
The vet called this morning and said the surgeon looked at her and the xrays and thinks that it is a very good prognosis if she is operated on.
But bc of the hip joint involvement cage rest wouldnt work
Her tail had also separated from the vertebrae, had no feeling in it and already was dying off maggots appeared last night..so to avoid gangrene that would have to be amputated.
Then she told me, she had gone to the save a pet fund committee at the hospital, and they gave the max 300 dollars, and if we could somehow find 500 more she would see if the director would agree to finance the 2000 more. Well Kays pay came in, and she said she would not pay bills and just juggle, if i agreed to kraft dinner and of course she wouldnt come visit to save gas.. Hydro, and all else will be waiting but..shes only a year old ! Vet asked the director ad not only will he agree to financing it, but it will be at no interest, 100 dollars a month. ANDwhen i saw him to thank him he said i know its a rough time, and you have lots of cats, so we dont normally allow food on account but get a couple of flats of wet and a bag of dry and charge it.
Apparently the staff including the trauma vets from last night had stayed over to see what would happen, cause they all fell in love with her. She licked their hands and wanted cuddles. (she is NO DUMMY...she normally runs from humans apart from me-she knew her life was on the line)
When Dr. Jamieson walked in and said its a go, told the surgeon to go ahead and prep, they all clapped and cheered.
She should be out in an hour or so.
I am SO HAPPY... it would have killed me to euthanize her knowing her prognosis was so good. Probably no limp or just a slight one, perhaps a little incontincence at first bc of the nerves near the tail where it separated, but that will resolve.
YAY YAY YAY
finally... unless god forbid something happens in surgery...she will have a long and happy life, albeit tail less.

I just opened my email, and received an answer to the one i sent the Director last night complimenting his staff..they were all so kind.
| Quote: | Dear Michelle, I'm sorry for all that you are going through. I hope that things work out with Sweetheart. I have spoken to Dr. Jamieson this morning and we're doing all we can to make the surgery happen. She will call you shortly.
Take care of yourself.
Sincerely,
Steve |
He sent that after i had left to go to the hosptial. what a great place!
And finally i can smile. 20 months of financing at zero interest and 100 a month is doable. She had told him that i couldnt get a loan, or CC so it was them or nothing. maybe im nuts, but losing her was...just to much for me. they made it possible.

I'm hoping she will do very well, VC. Beau's broken pelvis mended, he had to learn to hop since his amputated hind leg is gone up into the hip joint. He had to learn to navigate without his tail too. He is a happy kitty, I don't think he realizes he is any differnt than the rest of the kitties.
The big difference was that a truck driver saw him get hit on the freeway and took him to the nearest Vet. Since he was 'nobody's cat' that wonderful Vet kept him for 3 months and healed him at his own expense before giving him to me.
I'm sorry that this expense has come on top of the others, but also glad that you are getting some help with it. As catmoms there are things that we have to do.

thats right hiss. She is my little girl.
Boy did the hospital come through. its the biggest, most expensive hospital but they also save me lots by doing home care. I called to see if she was still in, and she is, but i didnt even know they had a "specialty surgeries section" which has its own team of nurses and recovery techs and vets.
They rarely do things on account, its 1/2 on estimate and the rest at pickup of animal. they sure dont do 20 months at 0% normally.
for those who think im crazy with the car and all else. I couldnt let her die when she had a good prognosis, and there was a way to get the surgery done. It destroyed me last night thinking i would have to kill her for a broken bone.

I don't think youare crazy at all. I would try to do the same thing. I know people are forced to make money vs. vet costs all the time. It is so hard. You did the right thing for all the right reasons and they gave you a deal you just could not refuse. I am happy for all of you!

Bean's right, VC. You did do the right thing for all the right reasons! The hospital truly believes in helping animals and understood your situation. How wonderful that a vet hospital would do that in today's world!!
Sweetheart sure knew how to capture the hearts of everyone that saw her too! How could anyone NOT fall in love with an animal that is purring and licking you? Especially when they knew what kind of pain the poor thing had to be in.
It's so good to know that finally there was good news! The sun's peeping out from behind the clouds. Hopefully everything will be clear skies soon!

I can't quote the Bible, but I know that in Genesis it is said that the animals are given to us as companions and we are made their stewards. It's heartwarming to me that so many Refs love and appreciate these little lives we are entrusted with.

That's very true, Hisss. There are an awful lot of us that have many and varied "babies" here. They love us in spite of all our faults, so how can we not love and look after them too?
It's nice to be in such good company here too! No matter what our opinions may be on any case that comes our way, we can always and forever agree on our animals!

VC -
There were two pieces of sunshine in your post. The part about Sweetheart and the part where you said you can finally smile again. Who could have imagined either statement even a few hours ago.
As I told you one other time, the fact that you are still standing despite all that has been thrown your way in recent weeks shows you are so much stronger than you know.
Having spent over $8000 on my own baby girl who died about 6 months ago from heart disease I can tell you it's amazing how the money becomes inconsequential when it comes down to it. I'm always so sad when I think of people who have to euthanize their pets due to monetary restrictions - much like you were facing over something that may have been nothing more than a broken bone. Since my husband and I are both the ends of our respective branches on our family trees I have thought many times that whatever I may have to leave upon my death that I'd like it to be for some animal healthcare emergency fund. A story such as yours simply reinforces that desire.
Best of luck to you kiddo. You and your babies surely deserve a break today. I hope the next time we hear from you it is with good news about Sweetheart's surgical outcome.

She is out of surgery awake and doing well.
It was 4 hours, a little more challenging than expected, the tail had to be removed at the sacrum so they needed to reconstruct, and then of course the pieces of pelvic bone and hipsocket put back together.
Surgeon is very very happy and says she should do very well. (of course complications are always possible).
I called and spoke to the vet..not surgeon to thank her for getting the financing and petsave fund together, and she said "it would have broken my heart to have to euthanize her when she had such a good prognosis" and that she wormed herself into everyones heart.
I kept wondering why she asked me to wait til today and let the surgeon see the films. bc i saw no chance i was going to euthanize last night. She had already planned to twist the directors arm!!!

VC, so glad to hear she made it through the surgery and is doing well.
Remember the kitty I told you about last night? When we went to pick her up after the vet said we could take her home, the assistant there told us that if we had said to euthanize her, that she was going to ask us if she could keep her and try to make her well. There's something so special about people who work with animals.
Hope this is the turning point for you and yours, VC.
