My grandfather was a farmer in the days horses were used as draught animals, maybe farm mechanisation started earlyer in the States?
Throwing away decent meat out of sentimental reasons is a cultural thing (and a sign of prosperity). Eating horsemeat is otherwise common sense.
Nobody is forced to eat it, so I don't really understand the ban. Take eg. Israel, not eating pig is a religious/cultural thing there, but there is no ban on slaughtering pig. |
yes thats what i meant about it being cultural. i dont know enough about history to say that we phased out livestock sooner but probably so compared ot some countries in europe so they became pets sooner.
yes it is a cultural thing but thats the way it is here. just like people would get so upset over dogs or cats being slaughtered when they are too old to play anymore, they are upset over the same being done to horses.

How many horses are slaughtered in the US each year?
According to the USDA, the three horse slaughter plants remaining in the US (two in Texas and one in Illinois) killed 65,976 horses in 2004 for human consumption and about twenty thousand horses were transported to Canada and Mexico for slaughter. Together, these numbers represent about 1% of the total number of horses in the U.S., and the entire industry is only 0.001% the size of the U.S. meat industry. It is entirely foreign owned, and pays no corporate taxes or export tariffs. The horse slaughter industry is economically insignificant.

As far as using horses for human or animal consumption, I don't care one way or the other.
The method of killing them is what I find disturbing. One of the links above is a video of how it's done. It is not bloody or anything, just graphic because you know what is coming. A blow to the head with a mechanical hammer, then they hoist a rear leg and cut the throat.
Here is a heartwarming story of "Marco". No mateer what your stance on horse slaughter, we probably all have the same feelings about animal cruelty and neglect.
"Marco" was one of the lucky ones. Check out the pictures, amazing. I'm proud to say my aunt is a supporter involved with this group.

I will post a 'before' and 'after', there are more at the link.

Oops, I should have said in my ^ above post, that some of the horses being slaughtered are neglected like this, but many are not disabled in any way. They are bought at auctions just for slaughter. Until I read this thread, I didn't know that either.

I emailed my Congresswoman and got her response 2 days ago! I keep forgetting to post it, so here it is while I'm remembering!
It's a terrific email from her and I'm glad I voted her!
I have Xed out her name because our primary residence is in a very small identifiable county. Our area is known as the "horse farm area" tho.

Thank you for contacting me to express your views on horse slaughter. I appreciate your thoughts on this matter, and as a former owner and caretaker of farm horses, I share your belief that these animals are enduring symbols of the American West that bear important educational and sentimental value for current and future generations.
You will be pleased to know that I recently supported legislation to ban the practice of horse slaughter. During consideration of the Fiscal Year 2007 Department of the Interior appropriations bill, the House passed an amendment offered by Representative Nick Rahall (D-WV) to prohibit taxpayer dollars from being spent in support of the sale or slaughter of wild horses and burros. I have consistently supported this provision over the years, and you can rest assured that I will carefully monitor this bill as it advances through the legislative process.
You may be pleased to know that I have been an ardent supporter of several other key measures in the 109th Congress to safeguard animals from harm. I am an original cosponsor of the Pet Safety and Protection Act, which would implement criminal penalties for individuals who unlawfully acquire animals from shelters, flea markets, or other sources in order to sell them to laboratories for experimentation. I also cosponsored H.R. 2669, the Pet Animal Welfare Statute (PAWS), which would strengthen regulations in the pet industry to ensure that dogs and cats are bred and raised in humane conditions. I continue to believe that we must act as responsible stewards of the animals entrusted to our care by promoting humane treatment for wildlife, pets, and livestock alike.
Again, thank you for taking the time to get in touch with me. I value your interest and input, and hope to hear from you in the future regarding other matters of importance to you.
Very truly yours,
xxxxx x xxxxxxx
Member of Congress

Well I'm pissed now, pax!!
After reading her email more closely (yeah I know, bad grammar! lol), she mentions NOTHING about the Bill I wrote her about and I was very clear I was talking about Bill H.R.503 Title: To amend the Horse Protection Act to prohibit the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of horses and other equines to be slaughtered for human consumption, and for other purposes. Sponsored by: Rep Sweeney, John E. [NY-20] (introduced 2/1/2005) and she skirted that issue!!
So, I just wrote her again!
*To everyone - please write your Congressperson about this Bill today! September is fast approaching us! (geeze, I can't believe it's August 6th already!)*
