Where did your cats/dogs come from?
and what are their personalities?
We have shared stories and pics, but i thought it would be fun to talk about who they are, how we got them and their quirks.
So here are mine.
1. Mittsy, 18 years old. He was a humane society adoption. 6 months and sitting in a cage, he had been there since he was born but lucked out by bein placed at the pet smart section where they dont get returned for euthanizing unless sick. He is a gentle giant of 28 pounds now, and cares for all cats and critters. Babysits sick ones, and is always kind. Arthritis
2. Punkin. 17. She was a rescue, found abandoned as a 6 week old in an empty barn. All alone, hungry and cold. She came to me, and before i had a chance to spay her, she got preggies. Needed an emergency caesarian. Great mom, all black with siamese looks. Small little princess. She is demanding, wont take shit from any other animal.
3. Marco. 7 i think. He was a feral we thought, he got into a neighbors house and attacked his face and arms 3 times. Thought he was rabid but got him out of the house. Then he arrived at mine. I couldnt take him to the humane society, he was way to vicious. Any time i walked near him he jumped 3 feet straight up trying to shred me. No choice, ad him neutered and slowly over a year he learned to trust. Turned out that he had been abused, and his defence to humans who walked..moving their arms, was to attack first. He is a snuggle lover now. Chrons disease or Inflammatory bowel
4. Butterscotch. You all know his difficulties health wise. I got a message on my machine 4 years ago or so, saying "you dont know me, but i found an abandoned cat 2 years ago and let him eat here. Hes a biter, and im moving so took him to be put to sleep today and felt guilty so rescheduled for tomorrow. Gloria of Jamboree told me that you sometimes take in animals and i wonderedif you would". Of course i went to pick him up, and 6 months later he wasnt biting anymore. Just needed love. Chronic upper respiratory virus due to herpes
5. Linus. I had lost a couple of cats 2 years ago, one to illness, one an accident, and 2 strays just disappeared as well. He was my "treat" and a humane society adoption. curious as all get out, he has been accidentally locked in cars of 2 neighbors who didnt see him get in when they came home at night, and once got an hour away when one left for toronto. (im in a ski area, many use it as cottages). She turned around and returned my traveller. Sweet, cuddle and to loveable for his own good Herpes. (he may have brought it in, bc he had a bit of a flu when he arrived but i think it was the next two. He didnt get to sick since he had been vaccinated)
6/7. Braveheart and Sweetheart. 2 stunted feral kittens. The size of 2 months old but were actually 6. a person in the area dropped them off in december afraid they wouldnt make it through winter outside. Braveheart turned out to be very ill, took a month to get her through rampant diahrrea and her sister is/was a chicken. Both are big girls now and sweet as can be. Both have herpes but finally outgrew the infections and secondary infections
8. Scarface. A 10 year old unneutered male, he appeared for food, with an enormous abcess and millions of scars. Couldnt afford the vet, so treated the abcess at home, and it finally got better. Hasnt seen a cat that he doesnt think he can beat up, and always loses. Not neutered bc he needs full surgical techniques due to a heart murmer, and the cost is prohibited right now. Regular vets have refused to do it, they say the risk is to great unless they treat it like an invasive operation and even then. Alta vista will, but of course its 300 not 110 like normal. He is a big suck thought who only thinks hes mike tyson. the nerd on the charles atlas commercial is more like ti.
9. Mini scootch. A feral who came with a buddy in winter to eat, wont let me near him yet. His buddy got killed, and the same day he entered the house. He sleeps and eats here, and will play on the sofa with others, but runs if i stand up. We are slowly getting there though.
10. No name. Starving starving female, who i suspect is pregnant. Pretty sure she was dumped in front of my house, since she is socialized. Still very nervous, but purrs whencuddled and comes and goes as she pleases. Want to spay but that will have to wait a bit. She is a calico tabby.
10.5 charlie. Gerhardts offspring i think, gerhardt was an old stray i had, but another neighbor feeds him mostly but he comes here when she is away for a few days. We share feeding him.

(All cats...I didn't even think I liked cats before these guys happened!)
1. Cleo (12 yo) I'm a CPA and did some pro bono accounting for the SPCA. Every time I went there I wanted to take someone home. One day this little kitten literally pleaded with me.
2. Brutus (1 yo) I'm now teaching college classes. One of the students saw a dead cat on the road on her way to school and one baby was laying beside her body. She put him a box and brought him to school hoping someone would take him. NOT ME. But...it turned out the little guy was only 21/2 wks old and the SPCA would not bottle feed an animal.
I grabbed the box just as she was leaving to take him to the SPCA to be
euthanized. He is truly my baby...after over a month of bottle feeding every 2-3 hours.
3. Michael (15 weeks) My daughters friend had a cat that had kittens. When they were 8 weeks old the family went on a ten day vacation and let the cat and the remaining two kittens in their basement to be cared for by a friend. Well, 3 days after they left I had my daughter take me to her house because I wanted to see the little kittens. They had NO FOOD and NO WATER...I was furious. I ran two big bowls of water and they just drank and drank. I was almost crying.
I made sure mama and another cat had supplies and I took the babies to my house for some play time and fell in love. Well, I was put on notice here that two cats were enough...so I got my hairdresser to adopt one and the owners were keeping the last one.
Well, after 2 days my hairdresser called to say the she was so allergic that she couldn't keep the kitten. So........
He is a doll.
Pictures are all posted on the other thread.
Plus you'll get to see my groundhog who comes to visit me everyday for a visit and a couple of PopTarts!!

I only have one cat, Sister, a ten year old dark tortoiseshell spayed female. She was originally a rescued kitten with her sister from a Texas farmer who was going to destroy the two kittens. A friend's daughter brought them to Kansas and they found a home with the friend.
However, Sister lost her sister to some illness, some other cats and a Yorkie were moved in on her, and she moved out onto the deck for two years. She had to be caught for our introduction.
When we got a house, my daughter announced at school, "We can get a cat!", her friend volunteered to give us Sister, as it was felt that Sister wanted to be an "only cat". When my daughter and I went out to meet Sister, to see if we were compatible, the friend could not get Sister into a carrier fast enough. We brought her home, let her out of the carrier, provided a cat box, food and water. Sister immediately ran under the bed and only came out after we went to bed that first night. By morning, she was sleeping with one or the other of us, demanding that she have more food, scoop the cat pan, pet me, etc. She has taken over the house.
She is still not a cuddle cat and does not like to be held, but sleeps with us each part of the night. She will cuddle up to us on her terms. We try to understand and give her her space. We just accept her for what she is--THE BOSS. However, when she had surgery to remove a small growth that was bothering her when she ate, she allowed me to remove the stitches, only two, without a murmer, no wrapping, no holding down, from her upper lip. She purred throughout the procedure. And she will let me give her a kitty manicure when her scimitars get too long.
Wouldn't trade her for the world.

All 3 of my kitties came from friends who didn't spay their cats.
1. Soupy aka Big Kitty - Rules the house. Big Kitty don't do what Big Kitty don't wanna do. You can pet her when she's in the mood but try to pet her any other time and you're gonna get scratched. Is warming up to the new kittens. By warming up I mean she's taken to just bopping them on the head when they pass by and no longer rolling them down the hallway growling her head off. I swear Big Kitty speaks English as she'll come racing round the corner if she hears you say the words, "Fancy Feast," "outside," or "car." Also likes to raid my purse for hair scrunchies which she carries around in her mouth while meowing at the top of her lungs. Problem is once she gets hold of a scrunchie I never see it again. She's got a well-hidden stash somewhere.
2. Anderson aka Orangey - He's new and still learning the rules from Big Kitty. Completely destructive. His latest adventure was to climb my bedroom curtains and actually pulled them down off the wall. He likes to chew my hair and paw my eyelids when I'm sleeping. Thankfully he's just learned how to retract his claws so I'm no longer in danger of losing an eye. He can't meow right and sounds more like a squeaky wheel than a cat.
3. Scratchy Paws 2 aka Whitey - She's Anderson's sister and named after another kitty we used to have. Whitey reminds me of the Brain on Pinky and the Brain. I have no doubt her mission is to rule the world. If her eyes are open, she's up to no good. Loves to jump in the fridge when you open the door, loves to shred paper towels, loves to climb my legs like I'm a tree. She'll start grooming her brother and then suddenly bite his throat when he tries to get up. Funny thing is both kittens can't sleep unless they're curled up next to each other and both kittens have taken to sleeping in the baby swing I bought for my grandson.
I love my cats like I love babies but these three can wear me out. I tip my hat to those of you with so many. The litterboxes alone would kill me.

I love all my kitties, there are too many to list. I was able to start doing full time rescue about 10 years ago when my mother had to go into a nursing home and I was here alone with just my 5 cats. My strays come from all over, people call me and I go and get them. After a Vet check, shots, spay or neuter, I keep a list of people wanting to adopt cats, so some have new homes and some stay here with me.

Wow Hisss, what you do is more than wonderful.
But, you must have to experience loss too often.
Isn't that difficult?
The three that I have are my first go at this pet thing...the thought of losing one of them....well, I can't even think about it, it would hurt too much.

Gaby, it does hurt very much and I will especially never get over missing my old girl kitty Elizabeth. She died almost 3 years ago, from old age really and she was past 18. She was my buddy through thick and thin all of those years. With the sick and injured I try to think that maybe their life was happier having a real home.

Thank you Hisss for all your hard work in taking care of these poor animals. If I were wealthy or had more money, I would love to do that as well.
At any rate, I have a question for you since you seem to have such a vast knowledge about cats...
As I had stated in a previous post, my daughter and I have hand-raised a kitten from the time she was 10 days old until now. Her mother had three kittens but moved two of them and essentially abandoned this one. While the mother has always came back and allowed the kitten to nurse some, for the most part we have bottle-fed her. She just turned 5 weeks old. Her two brothers are eating very well with moist food and love it. She, on the other hand, is perfectly content to sit in our lap and have us squeeze her formula onto a spoon and lick it from there. She won't attempt to eat any food nor will she attempt to drink her formula out of a bowl, only when we are holding her and allowing her to lick it from the spoon. Yes, I know, it sounds like she is spoiled rotten which she is...LOL. At any rate, I was wondering if you had some pointers to offer about how to encourage her to eat from a bowl, either her formula or moist food. I can imagine her being a year old and still drinking formula from a spoon in our laps...LOL.
Thanks in advance!!

Hi adrienne37
I can share a method that I've tried with some success and maybe it will work for you. To a non-cat person it would sound nuts If you sit on the floor with her and have your hand around her, use a small bowl with the formula and just a tad of food mixed in. Talk to her and scoop a little with your fingers and hopefully she will lick and eat from your hand. You can gradually make the formula thicker with food. As long as you talk to her and sit this way she should start eating more on her own. One of these days she'll be hungry when you're not there and she'll eat by herself. This worked for a friend of mine too, but if she starts to leave the kitchen the cat stops eating. Gotta love em, they are all different.

GLAD SHE DID NOT HAVE A MERCEDES! |
Hi LTF-lol!
I've always heard that cats and Chihuahuas get along pretty well, it sounds like you have quite a pair. I am LOL at your car payment trade. When I was married I used to make police dolls and dress them with pieces of old highway patrol uniforms. One girl talked me into trading her a doll for a really pretty longhaired kitty. Boy did I get stuck on that one, it turned out to be a pregnant cat and had 6 kittens in our clothes closet. I watch out now when somebody mentions "trade".

Thanks very much Hisss. I will definitely try that method. I have no doubt if we weren't here and she were hungry enough, she would definitely eat by herself. I think she's just a tad bit too spoiled for her own good.

Wait until you have a 19 pound miniature black panther demand his own place at the breakfast table, complete with place mat!
I took him home from one of my mother's cat's litters when he was about 3 months old. He was at least 3/4 siamese, coal black, lithe, long and lean. The largest kitten, he was the last to give up nursing, pushed the others out of his way. Crisp bacon was the only solid food my mom could get him to eat at first. He wanted Mama!! but succumbed to bacon.
As a treat, I would let him have a bite of bacon on Sunday morning at breakfast. This grew into him jumping into a chair and refusing to move off until he got his bacon. The entire family gave in to his whim of iron and would provide bacon bites on HIS placemat which he would pick up with his hand (paw) and eat very tidily, hand to mouth. Never did he once use his mouth and teeth to take a bite of bacon from the table.
He learned another "human" behaviour, too. He would use the toilet--and we never tried any training in this area. But he never did learn to flush!
We had him for 19 years, losing him to kidney failure. I guess the bacon didn't hurt him any.

Torti, he sounds like a great cat and thanks for sharing your memories. I know we all keep our ones who are gone in a special place in our hearts. I can just picture your guy at the table for his bacon and I'd say it must have been good for him!

I have Kramer (named after the Seinfeld character), age 10. Two kinds of hound dog, from an animal rescue in the deep south (southern Illinois).
I thought he would be like Duke on the Beverly Hillbillies, but his nick name is "Barks Like A Maniac". When he was a puppy he ran from window to window barking at everything walking around outside. The crate didn't work because he cried constantly and tipped it over one night. I think he is going a little deaf, but that's ok with me.
He's getting older and takes joint meds and glucosamine, so I hope I'll have him for a few more years.
He loves the water and has never stopped splashing out his water bowl. He also loves to jump in the tub and splash. He spends more time sleeping now, but so do I.

OMG, Wabbi. My son has a huge, 25 lb. cat named Cosmo Kramer after the Seinfeld character also. Kramer, AKA Bigboy, is not fat, he's just BIG!
And he's the sweetest cat you'd ever want to meet. He has a soft, tiny meow as opposed to what you would think a big cat like him would have!

Our beloved tuxedo cat, Boots passed away at age 19 in November 2004. She adopted us before our first son was born. We were living in an apartment and her owners moved without her. She had "accepted" another cat that I received from a co-worker but was very spoiled. When we had to put Merlin down (black cat) due to kidney failure, we never got another animal.
I have always had dogs and cats and because my boys were getting older I wanted an inside "baby" but couldn't bring myself to getting one because of Boots. She was so old and I didn't want to take anything away from her. When we finally buried Boots, I went to work and was telling a friend about it and told him I wanted a Maltese baby and he asked if a Shih Tzu would do. He had bred his Sam and they had one puppy unclaimed. We went to see them and fell in love. We had to wait two weeks and in conversation I kept calling him son of Sam. When my son reminded me about the murderer I cringed. I couldn't think of a catchy name for him and finally called him Samson. (From Sam's son).
Another co-worker had been talking about a pregnant cat that had been dumped at her complex and they had fed her. She had four kittens by the creek bank and eventually brought them to their backyard. They fed them and the mama was obviously a slut because she immediately became pregnant again and had six kittens. She had 10 kittens within about 6 months. One of her neighbors took one of the older ones. (These cats were still wild) and she was moving and trying to get rid of the others.
I took the boys to look at the kittens and decided to get one. Each of boys chose one of the older kittens, both tuxedo cats. I agreed to get both. I carried my carrier to work for her daughter to catch the two to bring home. When she brought them, she brought one we chose and the orange tabby brother. She couldn't catch the other tuxedo but wanted us to keep the orange one until she could capture the other tuxedo and we would return the orange tabby. Well, I hated to separate the three and yes, we kept them all.
So, needless to say we have BB, the orange tabby with white face (She named him that and it was short for Big Balls because they were big and he was boss), Georgie, the sweet girl tuxedo cat (with a black face and one side of her mouth is white and when she turns sideways, it looks like half of her face is missing), Spike, the tuxedo male with a very uneven white nose that looks like his hair is "spiked" and Samson, the evil shih tzu.
Samson looks exactly like Reddog's fluffy except he has one blue eye. Very bizarre looking. Needless to say, the cats have never been outside and still very standoffish but will love you when they want to. The only one that allows us to randomly pick up is Spike. Spike and Samson are buds and BB and Georgie are buds. It's funny how they pair off.
They have all been neutered and spaded and there will be no more animals for many years. We have been fortunate and not had but one illness in almost two years. Samson had an advanced case of colitis last fall. He is a little monkey and thinks he is a cat. While we were gone one evening, he jumped on my kitchen table an consumed a chunk of a 5 pound Hershey bar my son had won.
He is a standard shih tzu, weighs about 14 pounds and can jump and get anything he wants off the countertops in the bathroom and kitchen. He loves to close doors from the inside and lock them. He is quite the man of adventure. He goes with me everywhere and when I take a shower, I have watched him jump and lock the door with his teeth. It is amazing.

My dog Angelina came from the Espanola Animal Shelter. It's a wonderful place. They made sure she was spayed, and gave her a little tatoo of a spade on her belly. Angie was only six weeks old, and had been found wandering around the town. They were going to put her down because they had far too many dogs at that time. Many had been returned after being given as Christmas presents. It was a couple of weeks after Christmas, so I celebrate her birthday on Thanksgiving. I am thankful for her friendship.

Pax,
Animals are wonderful friends. Their love is unconditional, just like a baby's love. It's funny, I remember how my babies loved me. It didn't matter if I yelled at them, spanked them or what, they always loved me. My animals are the same. Regardless of my mood, they love.
Now as my boys are becoming young men, they love me and I know it. However, their love is not quite the unconditional love as it was when they were babies or my animals. Animals maintain an innocence about love, unlike humans. There are advantages of animal children. They always listen and rarely talk back. Now, Samson, he will sit and talk to you like a child. When he wants something, he talks, he doesn't bark. The only problem I have with him is that I haven't quite figured out what language he speaks. My kids call it the spoiled doggite language.

Ha ha, bham mom, spoiled doggite!
Reminds me of that Far Side cartoon. What you say: "Now Rover, don't go chasing cars down the street, okay Rover, you got that Rover?" What they hear "Blah blah blah Rover! blah blah blah Rover!"
What kind of animal is Samson?

Shih Tzu. Identical to Reddog's fluffy.

1) Sybil 21 years old. She was the last remaining kitten from a litter by my then 11 year old daughter's cat. The 11 year old climbed into her daddy's lap when the 2nd to last left the house and with tears streaming, begged to keep Sybil. And Sybil stayed. She's scared to death of everything. Lived on the 3rd floor exclusively with my daughters while they were home and when they left relocated herself to the basement. (Guess it got lonely up there!). Just this last year she has decided to join us and now is perched comfortably on the back of the couch.
2) Homey, 9, Oh my what a cat! Daughter # 3 brought him home one day. He was so very tiny and so very lovable! My daughter was in college and said she would take him when she finished and moved out. She's gone, Homey is still here. He bonded with my youngest son and no one had the heart to separate them.
3) Sadie 8. We got Sadie from the Humane Society when she was 3 months old. She came to live with us just 3 weeks after her predecessor Cassie died. She had some really tough shoes to follow. Being part lab and part golden she was a total bundle of energy and a tireless puppy. She has slowed down alot in the last year and has now been dubbed Saint Sadie!
4) Bailey 3 months. Youngest daughter "found" her in the street late one nite. Snuck her into the house and kept her a secret for 2 days before she sprung her on us. My initial reaction was a resounding NO, ABSOLUTELY NOT! My daughter left to go back to college today and Bailey is here with us. She promised to take her when she graduates and gets a job. Familiar story. LOL
These are just the 4 who live with us today. They were many more who have gone on are sorely missed.
