Fans of Stephen King!

The first Stephen King book I read was The Stand and I couldn't wait to read more. It's still my favorite of his books, what's yours? Twisted Evil

I have lots of favorites for different reasons, but the one I have read over and over is "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon". The line about the mosqitoes landing on her eyelids and beginning to feed sent chills down my spine for some reason and struck me as one of the most horrible things I could imagine!

What did you think of the Dark Tower series and especially the "ending"?

I liked the Dark Tower series but my mind was going in a different direction from the ending.
I guess the one that gave me the heebie jeebies the most was "Thinner" from the Bachman books. Once in awhile when I see a really obese person I get flashbacks to that story. Twisted Evil
I also really liked Misery and I think that was the best movie of the ones made from his books.

His only book that I didn't finish and still have was Rose Madder

Are you a rabid collector like I am. My books are sacred in my house and I am very proud of the number of 1st Editions I own. I even have paperbacks for loaners as I won't let anyone touch my hardbacks lol.

BTW-can you do an O/T post in the NH forum about this thread. I have no idea how to post links. Thanks

I'll give it a try, I'm not sure about posting links within the forum but I'll tell them where the thread is.

As for books, I have so many that my brothers are always telling me my house is a 'firetrap' Laughing I will only trade with my youngest brother since he treats books as well as I do. One of the best things my Mom ever did for us was take us to the library to get our first card and meet the librarian Exclamation

My fave King book is Dolores Claiborne. I also like The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. These are 2 books that are realistic, compared to, say, Christine or Pet Sematary.

BTW, Pet Semetary is not only my least favorite King book but one of my least favorite books EVER. Hell No I hate that book, I guess because I love cats and it gets under my skin too much.

I also like The Shining, Thinner, Insomnia..he has so many, it's hard to choose, and aside from Pet Sematary which I actively hate and a couple of others that either bore me when I try to start them or I just can't finish, it's hard to choose.

I have not yet read The Stand, believe it or not. I have a relative who just is not a reader at all, and he has read that book from cover to cover 5 times. I haven't had the time. I realize it's one of his best works, I'll get around to it.

I've had a cat rescue on my farm for 20 years so I love cats too. Pet Semetary is just weird fiction to me. I'll have to say that I never looked at any of SK's works as realism.
I think you'll like The Stand, it's storytelling at it's best!
There's a link to my Rescue pages clear at the bottom of the Index where people list their websites.

I get attached to my cats, so I was REALLY disturbed with Pet Semetary when the cat came back alive "wrong". ::shivers:: I didn't finish the book.

I guess what I mean about realism is Dolores Claiborne and The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon are not supernatural- I do think Dolores Claiborne is a poignant look at an abused woman's life, though.

I want to read The Stand sometime soon, but figure it will take me about 1500 hours. SK is the greatest but sometimes he does get a bit wordy. Smile

That series was really different from his other books, I didn't like it as well. I think I remember reading it when I was snowed in. Twisted Evil

THE STAND is my fav too. I read it in one sitting, and it's a fat book! I finished it at about 7:30 AM and was sitting on the very edge of the couch with sweat pouring off my head!

IT is my second fav.

I love how descriptive he is I *see* the story i my mind so vividly...and how he weaves lotsa complex charachters, and the ones you think are gonna make it...don't! Not predictable at all.

The Stand or The Shining. I loved them both. I was always an avid reader (kids got in the way) and had hundreds of hardback books. After moving them so many times I finally had a yard sale in the late 80's and sold them all. I could kick my butt.

I'm buying all of Stephen King's books again for my 16 year old. He loves them. Of course I go to the thrift stores and buy his. Embarassed

I have always watched the movies based on Stephen King's books but have always been disappointed with them because I read the books first. However, I did get to see "The Shining" on big screen. That was truly amazing. The Alabama Theatre still has "special movies" and this was one. The big screens are so much better. Gee, bring back the good ole days. Laughing

I agree about being disappointed at most of the movies, but I thought they did a good job with Misery. Cathy Bates really made that character come alive. Amazon.com has a lot of good buys on bargain books and used books. I need to get a hard cover copy of The Stand, my paperback is as limp as Jimmy Swaggert's bible. Laughing

I liked The Tommyknockers also, well I guess I liked them all Exclamation

You are correct RD, The Gunslinger is the first of the DT series and it does jump back and forth in times. I think my attachment to that series is how he connects so many of his books to that story. It is just amazing to me!

Has everyone read The Cell by now?

I haven't read The Cell yet either, I got sidetracked with a bunch of true crime books by Anne Rule.

I don't know if I'm spelling it right, but did anyone like The Langoliers? The book and the movie were both pretty wild imo Twisted Evil

I love Stephen King, the first book I read was Salems Lot. I think I was 12 or 13 at the time and have been a fan sense.
I loved Pet Semetary, I cried my eyes out when Gage died, hated the movie though.

I loved the dark tower series but I wasn't impressed with the last book because he let Jake die again and inserted himself into the story too much.

I liked Salem's Lot. They run the movie on TNT once in awhile and I always watch part or all of it. When I read Needful Things it reminded me a little of Salem's Lot.

What do y'all think of The Green Mile?

I saw that movie WAY after it was out in the theatres, my son and I rented it on Netflix almost a year ago, and I was TOTALLY blown away. That was an AWESOME movie. Then of course I got the book and that was fabulous.

Can someone give a synopsis of The Stand? I know I read it prolly years and years and years ago....I forget.

Thanks for that newsletter addy sandraK!
I always have a stack of his books put aside to read again when we get our miserable winter weather. This year, IT and The Green Mile that SS mentioned are already in it Smile I don't think there is anyone writing today who can make a character come alive the way SK does.

I loved the GreenMile also a great movie . I haven't read the Stand in a long time but just of memory it was about a plague that wiped out most of the world and the surviors made a long trip across the states to find others. Good vs evil kind of thing. I'll have to pull out that book and re-read it. Very Happy
Cujo was also one of my favorites.

hisss, I liked the movie, but not as well as some. I think it was actually one of his novella-length stories, wasn't it?
