Horse Park could be in Barbaro's future

DERBY WINNER MIGHT LEAVE HOSPITAL IN JANUARY

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, on the mend at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center, might be headed to Kentucky.

New Bolton Center has not issued a timetable concerning Barbaro's release. But co-owner Gretchen Jackson has told the Philadelphia Inquirer that the colt might leave the hospital anywhere from within a few days to sometime in January.

A month ago, Jackson said she doubted Barbaro would return home to Lael Farm that she and her husband, Roy, own near Kennett Square, outside Philadelphia.

But she did say she considered Barbaro to be "America's horse" and thus should go somewhere like Kentucky Horse Park.

Horse Park executive director John Nicholson said yesterday, "We would be honored to welcome him into the Horse Park family," if the Jacksons decide to send the horse there.

But the Horse Park has not discussed this with the Jacksons, according to Nicholson.

"We don't think it's appropriate for us to aggressively solicit the horse until his owners and his medical team feel that he's comfortable and stable," Nicholson said.

On Tuesday, Dr. Scott Morrison, head of the equine podiatry service at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, did some minor work to Barbaro's left hind foot.

The left hind hoof contracted laminitis, a painful and potentially deadly swelling, last July as a result of Barbaro's transferring weight from his fractured right hind leg onto his left.

"We remain concerned about the long term management of his left hind foot," New Bolton's Dr. Dean Richardson, Chief of Surgery, said in a statement yesterday.

But as for the colt's overall health, "His comfort on both hind limbs is good and his overall condition is excellent," Richardson added.

Barbaro underwent surgery to repair the fractured right hind leg after breaking down in the Preakness Stakes last May. The colt has remained at New Bolton Center since then. Richardson removed the leg cast Nov. 6.

One reason Barbaro's future home remains uncertain is that his future status as a breeding stallion also is in doubt.

"We don't even know if the horse can mount a mare," Gretchen Jackson told the Inquirer.

"The (left) foot isn't stable yet," she said. "He has to be cared for in such a way that it isn't taxed. It's still an issue and it may be for the rest of his life."

Jackson told the Philadelphia paper that a catheter had been removed from the horse's neck on Tuesday, calling that "a major step."

Nicholson, at the Horse Park, said that if Barbaro is able to breed, he might need to find a more appropriate residence at a breeding farm.

"There is no precedent for breeding horses at the Horse Park," Nicholson said.

But if Barbaro did move to the park -- site of the 2010 World Equestrian Games -- he would join an illustrious lineup of champions-in-residence headed by John Henry.
