Country/Rustic Decor

I happen to like the country look.
Distressed furniture, etc.

Anyway, saw a cool idea on one of the home decorating shows and tried it. It came out so cool, I thought I'd share.

In my kitchen I covered the walls in quilt type pieces of calico fabric...it is gorgeous.

Here how.
You need material (you can buy pre-cut quilt squares or buy 1/2 yard pieces of different but complimentary design fabrics.)
My fabric was all shades of beige. Some little flowers, stripes, plaid, etc.
I used a pinking shear and cut many different shapes. Square, rectangle, hearts, diamonds...all various sizes.

Make sure your walls are clean.

Pour a gallon of liquid laundry starch in a small bucket or whatever.
Dip in your piece of fabric. Squeeze out excess and smooth onto your wall. Overlap etc.

This was very easy and the result is so cozy and unique.
Peels right off it you want to change, but stays put well. I did my kitchen two years ago and it is still beautiful.

Gaby, that is SO cool .. Very Happy
I've never even heard of doing that ..
A great alternative to wallpaper, which is a bitch to remove ..

What do you suggest starting with?
A small area or an entire wall?

Lushus,
If you were thinking of doing a wall, cut a few pieces of fabric and put it up and see how you like it. I threw some up in the stairway down to my basement to see if I liked it first!

It really does come right off, and the starch wipes off with a wet rag.

Make sure the material is thin and different designs.

I liked this so much I did my bathroom. Didn't expect it to stay up with all the moisture etc, but it did. If a piece comes up by the sink I just throw a little more starch on it and smooth it back into place

I also think this would be cool on a ceiling. Especially if you have an older house with cracks etc.

I love that idea with the quilt squares!
I did the rec room in the basement to hide the cement block walls, only I used tan grocery bags torn in pieces. The starch 'paste' was the same. Maybe I could take that off and use quilt squares, it would be much brighter and prettier. Thanks for the idea!!! There aren't any kids here now and I thought I'd use the basement for sewing and crafts. It's about the only place that I can keep the cats out of. Laughing

Thanks Gaby, did the bathroom you did have a shower/tub?
I really like the sound of this idea ..

Another good place for this would be a long dark (no window) wall ..
You could make it look like a hanging quilt if you add a wooden dowel to the top .. Cool

Gabby, I'd love to see that! My house is also country.. We have a great place in the area that sells things made by different vendors, and it's all country. I love browsing because most things are one of a kind..but, your idea sounds wonderful!!

I just happen to have one.
It came out of a very old house...authentic.
Too bad it's such a drive, I'd load it up and bring it over to you!

Hiya Hannie! I've been waiting for her to post a pic since I asked. Sad I need to send her a PM to tell her to get her butt back over here and read these requests. Leave HE for a while. Very Happy

hehehe....I got here!
HE does get addictive, doesn't it.

I'm away right now (visiting brother in SC).
But, I promise to post pictures when I get home.
I'm not very good at it, but I have some of my animal pictures linked here from Flickr...so I think I can do that.

Hannie and Savannah...it seems I haven't talked to either of you for ages.
I'm glad we have other threads...the case is getting sooo cold, and it seems like every thread is one we've discussed before.

i stayed in a home with one of these tubs. they did not have a shower and the faucet was so close to tub that to wash hair you needed a cup of water to pour over head. i came home and thought thank god i have a walk in shower stall -lol. it was very pretty to look at but not when there is no shower in home ! loved the bubble bath though!

i learned how to texture walls and do faux painting--did some project in home .

I have one of those in my attice bathroom. Bought a restoration kit at Lowe's and refinished it. It looks fantastic, but it was a HUGE pain to do! Now looking for one of those shower thingies to go with it.

You might try Restoration Hardware for plumbing stuff. The pipe comes up from the faucet area and curves over the tub. You can also get a circular shower curtain rod that ceiling mounts, too.

I want one of those again some day!! I grew up with one of those-we didn't have a shower. It was an old farmhouse and my Dad (slowly) remodeled. You could almost go swimming in those old bathtubs.
When I ever get a chance to do something to my kitchen, I want one of those oldfashioned porcelain sinks. (the kind with the highback and the long drainboard area) We had one of those when we first moved into our old house when I was a kid.

I like this section of RU!!
