Fine Wines

If while feeding your soul, your spirit gets thirsty, the following article is interesting:
_____________________________________________________________

NY Times today, In the World of Fine Wines, There Will Always Be France

PERMIT me to speak briefly in praise of France.

Yes, France, the greatest wine producing nation in the world.

Don't look so shocked. I've heard about the Judgment of Paris, the famous blind tasting in which French and American wines went glass-to-glass in 1976, and the French lost. I know all about the greatness of California cabernets and shiraz from Australia, and I understand that the French lag in the clever global marketing of instantly recognizable brands of wine.

Nonetheless, no country comes close to matching France, either in setting demanding standards for its wine industry or in producing such a variety of consistently excellent wine. Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and the Rhone go without saying, but those famous regions are simply the most visible. From Jurançon in the southwest to Jura in the east, from Nantes on the Atlantic to Alsace on the German border, France makes wines that are endlessly compelling and should be endlessly inspiring

We live here and one of the first things we did was to go to a local vineyard. It is like a filling station. You can buy bottles of wine and different types, but you can also bring your plastic bottles and go to the vat with the wine of your choice and they fill your bottles for you.

Many of the local wines are enjoyable and very drinkable and very easy on the budget.

YIF you might be interested in this site. That tiny country won alot of prices and have a joint venture with France. Enjoy. I am not a wine drinker anymore but my hubby is.

Thanks, Blenchi,

It looks very interesting. I am thirty miles from the Spanish border and we do go into Spain a few times a month and pick up Spanish wines which are also lovely especially the Riojas.

We do have wine with dinner every night and I am known to follow the locals around in the wine section and buy what they buy as they know which ones are good. You can't judge the quality of a bottle of wine over here by its price.

I always had a problem drinking Chilean wines as I would get a headache.

I saw, Blenchi, that it is a Uruguayan vineyard, but I won't find anyone to follow in the Uruguayan wine section -- it is non-existent. We have a large selection of Spanish but prefer to buy them in Spain. We can get good Italian wines. I do not care for German wines. We can get some American wines but no reason to buy them. We can also get Australian and there are a few of those that I do like.

When they do the first harvest over here, they bottle the premiere wine. Again, when we first moved here, Peter had brought home a few bottles and I opened one to taste it. It was like koolaid. The premiere wines are very light but let me tell you they pack a punch especially after you've finished the bottle and didn't know it. I learned -- I haven't done that since.
