New Medical Plan for Butterscotch. (good sort of)

Once he beat the pneumonia he did wonderfully, lots of walks outside, and breathing reasonably well (given his chronic respiratory virus) with just a couple of inhalation treatments a day. In fact i kept them up bc this med works better if given regularly. Otherwise it was trully "upper respiratory", more like a person with allergies, snuffling and a stuffy nose.

Then he started to backslide, and he sounded like a roaring steam train again if his treatments were more than 6 hours apart as well.

I have been concerned and thinking, since it seemed he was actually better after the pneumonia than he was before. Today I called the vet and left a message asking if it made sense to put him on a chronic low dose antibiotic regimen, realizing it would mean a change of antibiotics when he gets pneumonia again (if he does). I thought maybe i was totally off base, but it seemed logical that there was some mycoplasma bacteria or other bacteria in his upper airway along with the viral infection he will always have.

Anway, his nurse just called back, and said that the vet has decided he will go back on the antibiotics for 2 weeks, then one week off, then 2 weeks on, 1 off for 2 months and to bring him in for a recheck then.

Im so glad i called with what i thought was a wacky idea, but i just didnt see why he should have to feel like a very healthy cat but some stuffy nose and occasional bronchitis symptoms after he gets pneumonia but not as good when he is no longer on antibiotics and recovered completely.

So he may be annoyed at me squirting cod liver oil flavored meds into his mouth twice a day but he will hopefully be going for 4 walks a day and catching a bug or two Smile on a regular basis.

Well he is an old man so maybe not every day! Ether way he has a good quality of life, i just want him to have the best one.

I love my vet. To be able to call and ask a question suggesting a different treatment and why, and have him come up with a plan rather than just ignore me as silly. Saved me a visit to, which wouldnt have told him anything more than i did on the phone and would have cost.

Sounds very good, VC. You know how intelligent cats are, I'm sure Butterscotch knows that you are taking very good care of him. He probably thinks of you as "Nursie" or some such in his mind.
The strongest bonding I have had with some of my cats came about through caring for them duriing an illness or after an injury.
Knock on wood I have had a few months without any of mine being ill. Now, if I could just teach Fernando to bring me coffee! Laughing

LOL i wish i could teach any of mine that!

He was always one of the "grumpy old men" since i got him, but ever since he has been sick with the various issues he has turned into a loverboy. Im sure he says "darn did i have to get sick to discover how nice it is to be given cuddles and attention".
