I NEED CAT ADVICE.......HELP, PLEASE!

There seem to be so many cat experts here...I hope I can get help.

Until last week, I had two cats.
Male 1 yr old.
Female 13 yr old.
Both neutered.

Last week, due to odd circumstances (which seems always the way I get a new pet!) I adopted a new 10 week old kitten. CUTE, CUTE, CUTE.

Now the 1 yr old male has turned horrid...to everyone. He never was a cuddle cat. I got him last year when 3 weeks old. Bottle fed for weeks, lots of love etc. This spring I have let him outside, which he loves to the point of obsession...never wants to come in.

Unfortunately, last week when the new kitty moved in, I departed for a previously planned trip to Maine for a week. I just got back last evening and was shocked at my male cat. He seems almost wild. Hissing, growling, biting...will not come in. I showed him mucho attention, and did not focus on the kitten.

I am so worried about him.
Was it the fact I went away. the new kitten, and if so will he get over it?

PLEASE help, what can I do to get my own kitty back to his justl moderately bratty personality? The new wild cat personality is disturbing.

I asked the bf who is a Vet. He said that in extreme cases (and yours sounds like one) Vets have had some success using a mild tranquilizer for a few days. That would help you handle your kitty more and reassure him. You might call your Vet and ask about this.

When you can get things back to normal, please think about keeping all of your kitties inside, they will live a much longer, healthier life. I screened in a porch for mine, they think they are outside but they're safe.

Hi Gabby it was probably a combination of both, but mostly that you went away. Amazingly enough, even though cats can have "hates" for another, they do end up tolerating each other. In fact i have never had an issue bringing a cat in to the house, its touchy for a week or so at times but nothing to bad from the 6-9 depending on year. How was he with the ktten before you went away.

Now when i go away!!!! apart from knocking over everthing they normally dont touch they really hate that. 3 Dont talk to me when i get back for days.

I have two suggestions, lots of attention that you are giving him, and especially some time for him where the kitten is in another room.

Also take him to the vet to get checked over and ensure its nothing physical. If it isn't perhaps a mild anti depressant or sedative if he seems really miserably unhappy?. Punkin went thru a period years ago after being spayed where she growled..and growled and growled and growled......all day long. Put her on anti depressants and she was terrific, back to her normal queenly self. 6 months later i could take her off them (tried at 3 months but the growls came back-vet said it was the same effect some women have after hysterectomy's, rare in cats)

Good luck! Time does heal all bad moods, (mostly)

Thanks Hisss and VC.
I just got back last night (the rest of the family was home. however, but he is partial to me). Perhaps with some extra attention he will chill out a bit.
Hisss....about the outside thing. Man, I struggled with that. Kept him in for a year, but he begged and pleaded until I finally gave in. He absolutely loves it outside, but I worry about him every day. My home is in front of some woods and no real road traffic up here.

Brutus never was a cuddly, lovable cat. I don't know why?? As I said, I raised him from a 3 week old kitten...with lots of love and attention. I guess it's just his personality. I'm hoping it changes as he ages.

Hey Gabrielle...
Agree with all the suggestions so far. You also might try Bach's Rescue Remedy...I just got some yesterday for our dog, who goes crazy when it thunders or when there are fireworks. We had a storm last night...gave him a few drops of RR...and for once we went through a storm without him pawing us, whining, trying to climb all over us, or running all around the house like something demented.

I struggle with the outside/inside thing as well...mine come and go through a pet door. They mostly stay in our backyard or on the patio, which is all fenced in. I used to always keep my cats in...and then after we had our child, there were so many kids coming and going, door opening all the time...the cats were always getting out and then going nuts because they really didn't know how to cope with the outside. So we finally gave up and installed the pet door.

And yes...they DO react to your being gone, even if there are other family members there. Mine always do strange things when I am gone...it just stresses them out no matter what we do to provide for them in our absence.

Good luck with it, Gabrielle...and please keep everyone posted.

Did I mention I came back a day earlier than planned because I missed the cats?
(I missed the kids also, but I called them daily and they knew I was coming back. The poor kittys' have no idea what is going on.)

Thanks MJ...I will try to find the remedy.I never heard of it. (Can I try it when I'm freaked out?)

Very Happy

hahaha, Gabrielle..it is actually FOR humans but people have been using it for animals for a long time. I got mine at the organic grocery store; probably could be found at any of the health/vitamin/herb stores.

Just make sure the Bach's RR is safe for cats. There are so many things they can't tolerate that even dogs can.

Hi MJ,
Your remedy might be just the thing for my Fernando. Thunder just makes him shake all over, sometimes he whimpers like a baby. If it's at night I wrap him in a little afghan and stick him under the covers with me. Daytime he will go under the bed or into a closet. The sound of high wind or hail affects him like that too. You don't want to hear about the 4th of July, last year he wet himself while I was holding him Crying or Very sad Dogs do this too, I have a friend who keeps a sedative on hand for her Irish Setter, she was so afraid that she jumped and broke a window but she seems like a nervous dog all the time.
My other cats are fine with storms, Ferny is just very different. Confused

A few of my cats have gotten "antsy" during storms but nothing like what you describe with Fernando. In fact, Fernando sounds like he likes storms about as much as my dog! It is awful to see him when the fireworks start...and around here we start hearing them a couple of weeks BEFORE the 4th of July. I had heard about that rescue remedy for a long time and decided to do something before we had to deal with fireworks.

Now I can't believe I put off getting this stuff for so long; lol...the store where I got it is about 4 blocks from where I live. It isn't like I had to drive an hour or so for it!

I'm almost ashamed to admit this, but when my kitty Elizabeth got so old, I would turn the answering machine up when I went to work. Then I'd call her several times and say "Mommy loves you, I'll be home soon". Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

hehe...Hisss, your phone calls to the cat cracked me up!
I had the family hold the phone up to my cat several times last week to talk to him.
"how's my baby..mommy loves you"...etc.

I got the strangest looks from anyone within earshot!

eta...MJ thanks for mentioning the remedy was from a human store. I was heading to the pet store today for it.

awwww hissss...I like that. And as long as it is confessions time: this year when hubby was working out of town I would hold the phone to the dog's ear so he could hear hubby's voice. Just read Gabrielle's post, and see that she did the same thing so maybe we are not so "unusual" after all.

MJ, People who don't have pets in their family are missing a lot, I think.

The rest of my confession is that Dr Mark would call from the Clinic once in awhile and say "Lizbeth, it's your daddy". She adored him, but she never figured out how he knew where she lived. LOL We went through 18 years together, when I would get depressed I would hold her, much better than a psychiatrist (and a whole lot cheaper!)
