STANLEY CUP FINALS
The Hurricanes were in the driver's seat heading into Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals, that is until an ugly goal by the Oilers' Ryan Smyth breathed new life into the matchup. Now, Alan Adams says the 'Canes must win Game 4 or risk losing the series.

I'll bet that goal looked pretty to Edmunton.

Just when it seemed like the Oilers were beginning to turn the tide in their favor, the Hurricanes made sure that wasn't the case. Mark Recchi's goal in the second period stood up as the winner as Carolina moved within one win of the Stanley Cup with a 2-1 win in Game 4 Monday night

"Over the last three games of the Cup final, Markkanen has gone eyeball to eyeball with the Carolina Hurricanes' Cam Ward, won two of those three contests and stopped 63 of 69 shots for a .948 save percentage."
....a snippet from one of our local papers here. Both of these goaltenders have been amazing to watch and I can't wait for the game on Sat. night!!
May the best team win!!

There's nothing else like championship hockey. Especially live. Amazing. I used to live in Detroit and went to some games. Some people from the crowd would throw dead squid onto the ice after a goal. I have no idea what that 'tradition' is about.

"For nearly 50 years, Hockey Fans in Detroit have been Throwing Octopi on the Ice after a big win by the Red Wings. This started on April 15, 1952 during the Red Wings' Stanley Cup run. Two brothers, Pete and Jerry Cusimano, who owned a fish shop in Detroit Threw an Octopus on the Ice during a Hockey Game in Detroit.
Each tentacle of the Octopus was symbolic of a win in the playoffs. Back then, the NHL had just six teams and eight wins (two best-of-seven series) were needed to win the Stanley Cup. The largest Octopus to be Thrown on the Ice was a 50 pound Octopus in 1996. The Octopus was proudly displayed on the hood of the Zamboni while the ice at the Joe Louis Arena was being cleaned between periods."
The "new" NHL won't allow teams fans to throw any items on the ice anymore, for safety reasons, with the exception of hats when there is a hat trick, don't know if the fans get them back or not.
Do you remember Florida Panther fans throwing plastic rats out onto the ice every time a goal was scored ...totally insane!! LOL

Thanks Lexy.
That is hysterically funny. I do have a vague recollection of the plastic rats.
What do you think of Edmunton's chances in Game Six?

Edmonton thoroughly dominated the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night and the 4-0 margin in Game 6 makes it hard to imagine the Oilers not hoisting hockey's Holy Grail above their heads in less than 48 hours. And it would not come as any shock to see defenseman Chris Pronger, who had another 31-minute night, take the honors for the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP

Does that answer your question Pax?

Yes, ATA. Thank you for the simple and direct response. 4-0 is quite a victory for Edmunton. Congratulations Oilers!
But every game is different. It ain't over till it's over. By the way, I'm rooting for the Oilers. They beat the Red Wings (the team I like) and I always root for the team that beats my favorite team. Unless it's Colorado, but that's another story, lol.
Just don't count your chickens before they hatch, ATA. Take it from me. The New York Knicks were up 3-2 against the Houston Rockets. I was sure we'd win the NBA Championship. We lost a squeaker in game six, and in game seven John Starks went something like 0-24 from the field, and we lost by 3. That was the last time I got cocky thinking my team was certain to win.

Colorado LOL
It was indeed a great game for Edmonton!! I thought Carolina looked tired, they couldn't seem to skate at the Oilers pace......Doug Weight is out with a shoulder injury and I think his absence was felt up front. Couldn't believe Erik Cole crashing and banging playing his first game since fracturing his vertebrae .....which reminds me, does anyone know how Steve Moore is doing in his recovery from the Bertuzzi punch?
And you're right pax, it ain't over till the fat lady sings....and I ain't singing till the end of the game on Monday

It should be a doozy of a game Monday night.
Here are a couple of interesting facts:
1. The last time an NHL came from down 3-1 to win the Stanley Cup was 1948.
2. There have been thirteen Game Sevens in Stanley Cup Finals history. The home team has won the final game eleven times.

Like the odds? The Oilers could become only the second team to win the Cup after trailing the final 3-1.
The 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs are the only team in NHL history to overcome a 3-1 deficit and win the Stanley Cup. The Leafs overcame a 3-0 deficit against the Detroit Red Wings en route to their win.
What hasn't been mentioned as often is the fact that four other teams also overcame 3-1 deficits before ultimately losing the seventh game.
The 1945 Detroit Red Wings were down 3-1 to the Toronto Maple Leafs before taking it to a seventh game. Nine years later, the Montreal Canadiens were trailing the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 before their comeback came up just short.
It didn't happen again until 1987, a year Oilers fans know well. Philadelphia was down three games to one but rallied to get the series to a seventh game. They took a 1-0 lead early in that Game 7 before the Oilers scored a trio of goals to win it 3-1.
The last time a team came back from a 3-1 deficit to force a Game 7 was the 1994 Vancouver Canucks. They defeated the New York Rangers convincingly, 6-3 in Game 5 and 4-1 in Game 6 before losing a hard-fought battle 3-2 in Game 7.
There is something in the air tonight
The oilers are bright, Fernando (Pisani)
They are shining there for you and me
For the Stanley Cup, Fernandoooooo.......
May the best team win

Well, I may be biased because I'm Canadian, but I think the Stanley Cup traditions far outstrip any other league.
First the trophy itself actually has class and dignity. The NBA trophy looks like the ball is too small to fit through the hoop. The World Cup reminds me of something I saw in a high school health text when they were discussing venereal warts.
Then the tradition of the playoff beard, the line up for the handshakes, the hoisting and kissing of the cup, the skate around, the team picture at centre ice.
