Spanish air crash kills 153
Thursday, 21 Aug 2008 09:35
At least 153 people were killed in a plane crash at Madrid Barajas airport yesterday afternoon at 14:23 local time, authorities have confirmed.
Investigators are at the scene at Barajas airport to determine what caused the Spanair MD82 to slide off the runway and catch fire as it was taking off.
Last night the airline confirmed 172 people, including 162 passengers and ten crew members were onboard the Gran Canaria-bound flight JK 5002.
Nineteen people survived the crash, Spanish authorities have confirmed.
The plane had previously had two flights cancelled due to technical problems, airport flight coordinator Javier Fernandez Garcia told the El Mundo newspaper.
Spanair has now released the names of the passengers involved but not their nationalities.
Spanish media claim there are a number of foreigners among the survivors, including German, Swedish, Chilean and Colombian nationals.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has not yet been able to confirm whether any British nationals were on board.
Madrid Barajas airport is experiencing severe disruption to both incoming and outbound flights due to the tragedy and Spain has declared a three-day period of mourning.
People concerned their friends or family are involved in the incident have been asked to call +34 800 400 200.
This story is so sad, one of those that reminds us of our own mortality. It shows 'you never know what's around the corner' . Twenty children, two babies and ordinary people off for a happy holiday. For me today, quiet reflection, a silent prayer and relief that my friends and family were not on that flight, my daughters are due to fly out next week. Deep appreciation for all I still have and feeling guilty for having it.
