RANDOLPH, Vt. — The former stepfather of a missing Vermont girl will be in court Wednesday to face federal charges that he destroyed evidence in connection with the search for 12-year-old Brooke Bennett.
Ray Gagnon, 40, will appear at 2 p.m. EDT in U.S. District Court in Burlington, Vt, to answer an obstruction of justice charge. If convicted, the San Antonio, Texas, man could be sentenced to life in prison.
Investigators searching for the girl arrested both Gagnon and her uncle, a registered sex offender, this week on sexual assault charges. Brooke is not among the victims, according to police.
The girl's uncle, 42-year-old Michael Jacques of Randolph, has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Detectives still have not found Brooke. The Braintree, Vt., girl has been missing since June 25 after she was dropped off at a convenience store in downtown Randolph by her uncle.
Gagnon reportedly traveled to the state from his Texas home to help out in the search for Brooke.
Gagnon was married to Brooke's mother for about five years; Brooke lived with them in Alabama. The mother, Cassandra Gagnon, told the San Antonio Express-News that Gagnon came to Vermont to try to lend a hand after her disappearance made national news last week.
"We're not doing very good ... not very good at all," the child's weeping stepmother Janet Bennett told FOX News Wednesday.
Janet Bennett is married to Brooke's father James Bennett and said the family was frustrated over the lack of information they're getting on the case. She discounted the possibility that Brooke might have left on her own.
"She's not the type of girl who would run away," she said.
Gagnon was arrested Tuesday on federal child molestation charges in connection with a sexual assault investigation involving Brooke's uncle.
Gagnon was in federal custody Tuesday on a charge of aggravated sexual assault on a minor, according to Vermont State Police, but his arraignment was canceled reportedly because of problems with the paperwork.
The arrest is related to the case against Jacques, who was charged on Monday with sexually assaulting a young girl over a five-year period. The girl told police she had been enrolled in what police called a program for sex.
According to court papers, she told police that Jacques was to be her trainer in a "program for sex" and that she had met three men affiliated with the program.
Girls in the program were warned that "the first (girl) who does it lives and the second gets her throat cut," according to an affidavit filed Monday at Vermont District Court for Orange County.
Col. James Baker, head of the state police, said authorities were considering all possibilities, including that the sex ring was a ruse Jacques created to intimidate the girl into having sex with him.
State police say Jacques, a registered sex offender, also is a "person of interest" in Brooke's disappearance.
The charges against Jacques — and now Gagnon — grew out of the investigation into the disappearance of Brooke, who was last seen at 9 a.m. June 25 when Jacques dropped her off at a convenience store in Randolph.
Store surveillance video shows the two leaving the store together and then Brooke going left out the door while Jacques goes right.
Brooke had told family she was to meet a friend to visit the friend's hospitalized relative. Police now believe that was a lie and Brooke intended to meet someone she'd met on the Internet.
Police have described their investigation into Brooke's disappearance as involving social networking Web sites.
A vigil for Brooke is scheduled for 8 p.m. EDT.

According to court papers, Gagnon rented a room in a house in San Antonio owned by Kevin Grosenheider. Gagnon allegedly called Grosenheider and asked him to throw out a safe that contained a laptop. The safe was thrown into a dumpster and police have not been able to find it.
Court papers also say that Michael Jacques knew Brooke's user name and the password to her MySpace account and went in and altered her page. Jacques also allegedly had Gagnon go on to MySpace and change Brooke's user name and password. According to the court papers, computer forensics traced activity on Brooke's page to San Antonio and Jacques' laptop.

What really has me worried is the part about the second girl who is brought in for sex gets her throat cut. I really don't think there is any chance this poor girl is still alive.

Wierd Coincidence
Brooke's mother and aunt (mother's sister) ended up both marrying sex offenders. I am not suggesting they are in anyway involved but it makes me wonder what attracted them to these guys.

This afternoon , CNN & FOX News both report that this case has taken a turn for the worst possible scenario. The child who had been sexually abused by the uncle for over 5 years told FBI officials that she was coerced into assisting to take Brooke to the conv. store where they dropped her off , and then later picked her back up to deliver her Back to her uncle's house to allegedly be initated into the Breckenridge sex Club by her Uncle & her Stepfather.
This child was 9 yrs old when her abuse began and now 5 years later for her at least it is finally over.
I pray that Brooke will be found.
My heart breaks for her family & friends.
My heart breaks for the hundreds / thousands of children who are sexually abused each year.
Greta will have full coverage tonight.
Nancy Grace has been covering this , so I assume she will have coverage as well.

Police Believe They Have Found Brooke's Body

Bethel, Vermont - July 2, 2008
Police believe they have found the remains of Brooke Bennett, 12, of Braintree. Police say the remains were found on property on Crocker Road in Randolph near the home of Michael Jacques. Police found ground there that had been recently disturbed yesterday. Today, a search found the body there. Police say Brooke's body was recovered at 4:45 p.m.
An autopsy will be performed in Burlington to confirm it is Brooke and to try to find the cause of death. Police do call the death suspicious.
Brooke's family was notified of the discovery.
Brooke disappeared a week ago. She was last seen at a Randolph convenience store with her uncle, Michael Jacques. Police had previously called Jacques a person of interest in her disappearance and they had been searching his property in Randolph.
Late this afternoon, federal authorities also announced they will charge Jacques with kidnapping Brooke. The affidavit will not be released until the charges are filed in court Thursday morning.
Police plan to hold a press conference at 10 a.m. Thursday to update the case.

That poor child. A part of me wants that 14-year old who helped lure her there to be charged with something as well. She admitted that she knew Brooke was going to be having sex with adult males. However, she has been a victim in all this too since she was 9.
Poor Brooke didn't stand a chance around these people. I hope God is holding her in his arms right now.
