Octopus on his head--man dies
Man dead after polar bear swim in Trail, B.C.

TRAIL, B.C. -- A man is dead after taking part in this town's annual Polar Bear Swim on New Year's Day.
Police suspect alcohol was involved in the death of the 44-year-old Trail man, who had been wearing a plastic octopus on his head when he participated in the icy swim along with more than 140 other people.
When the swim was over and participants were receiving awards on the beach, the man waded into the river again and disappeared under the water, said RCMP Staff Sgt. Nick Romanchuk.
"Everybody was out of the water when this occurred," Sgt. Romanchuk said. "He was observed flailing around in the water and then disappearing from sight."
It took about two hours to retrieve the man's body from the Columbia River at Gyro Park Beach, he said, adding the fire department and the 44th Field Engineers "went above and beyond" in trying to rescue the victim.
Sgt. Romanchuk said the man, whose name was not released, has had problems with alcohol, "so that may have contributed to some of his actions."
Sharman Thomas, a member of the 44th Field Engineers, said the incident occurred in a high-current area known as "the Onion," not in the designated area of the Polar Bear Swim.
