15 Highest-Paid American Athletes

In high school, you were the last person picked in gym class and the slowest kid to run the 400-meter dash. You earned two minutes of playing time during basketball games – but only after the starters gained a large enough lead that there was no way you could blow the game.

Ah, the glory days.

Let’s face it – some of us just don’t have an athletic bone in our bodies. But by the time you’re done reading this article, you’re going to wish you did.

For the past four years, Sports Illustrated has published “The Fortunate 50,” a compilation of the 50 top-earning American athletes, based on income on and off the field. Half of the list consists of NBA players; the rest is made up of 12 baseball players, five football players, three NASCAR drivers, three golfers (including the only woman to make the cut, Michelle Wie) and two boxers.


Read on to see America’s 15 top-earning athletes, based on estimates to salary, winnings, bonuses, endorsements and appearances, according to Sports Illustrated’s "The Fortunate 50."

1. Tiger Woods
Profession: Pro golfer
Fun fact: As the top earner, Woods earns twice as much as the second highest earner on the Fortunate 50.
Salary/winnings: $11,941,827
Endorsements: $100,000,000
Total salary: $111,941,827

2. Oscar De La Hoya
Profession: Boxing
Fun fact: De La Hoya took home $28 million in pay-per-view receipts alone from last year’s fight with Floyd Mayweather (No. 21 on the Fortunate 50).
Salary/winnings: $53,000,000
Endorsements: $2,000,000
Total salary: $55,000,000

3. Phil Mickelson
Profession: Pro golfer
Fun fact: Mickelson’s endorsement deals account for nearly 92 percent of his total income.
Salary/winnings: $4,256,505
Endorsements: $47,000,000
Total salary: $51,256,505

4. Shaquille O’Neal
Profession: Miami Heat (NBA)
Fun fact: O’Neal is close to the highest-salaried player in the NBA and just recently lost his title as “endorsement king” to No. 6, LeBron James.

5. Kobe Bryant
Profession: Los Angeles Lakers (NBA)
Fun fact: Bryant has the top-selling jersey number in the U.S. and China since he switched his jersey number from No. 8 to No. 24.

Total salary: $33,718,750

6. LeBron James
Profession: Cleveland Cavaliers (NBA)
Fun fact: In 2003, James signed a rumored $100 million in endorsement deals, including Nike, Upper Deck trading cards and Coca-Cola – to name a few.
Salary/winnings: $5,828,089
Endorsements: $25,000,000
Total salary: $30,828,089

7. Kevin Garnett
Profession: Minnesota Timberwolves (NBA)
Fun fact: Though he trails Shaq in this list, Garnett edges out over O’Neal by $1 million in salary, making him the highest-paid NBA player in the league.
Salary/winnings: $21,000,000
Endorsements: $8,000,000
Total salary: $29,000,000

8. Derek Jeter
Profession: New York Yankees (MLB)
Fun fact: Despite the Yankees’ loss to the Indians in the 2007 playoffs, Jeter has played with the team since he began his career in 1995.
Salary/winnings: $22,000,000
Endorsements: $7,000,000
Total salary: $29,000,000

9. Alex Rodriguez
Profession: New York Yankees (MLB)
Fun fact: A-Rod is due to earn another $81 million throughout the next three years of his contract – but experts say he could make more from another team after ’07.

10. Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Fun fact: Despite six trips to the playoffs, T-Mac has never advanced to the second round in his entire 10-year career.

14. Barry Bonds *
Profession: San Francisco Giants (MLB)
Fun fact: With 756 home runs in the 2007 season, Bonds finally broke Hank Aaron’s record. After 15 seasons with Giants, the controversial player wasn’t re-signed for the 2008 season, leaving his new team – and salary – up in the air.

Profession: New York Yankees (MLB)
Fun fact: Before taxes, Clemens makes $28,000,022 annually – the extra $22 is to match his jersey number.
