DeGeneres Doggie Drama Continues
Shelter Owner Claims She's Received Death Threats After Taking Puppy From Home

Oct. 17, 2007 —

A doggie drama that pits talk show host Ellen DeGeneres against an animal shelter is heating up as the shelter owner says she's received death threats and is afraid for her safety.

The controversy began when DeGeneres adopted a pup named Iggy from Pasadena, Calif.,-based Mutts and Moms animal shelter. But when the dog could not get along with DeGeneres' cats, she gave the dog to her hairdresser's 11- and 12-year-old daughters.

But the shelter stepped in and took the dog back, saying DeGeneres had signed an agreement that if she cold not keep the dog she would give it back to the shelter. In addition, the shelter says it has a policy of not giving puppies to families with children younger than 14.

DeGeneres, who is known for her rambunctious and spirited greetings at the beginning of her talk show, stunned her audience Tuesday when she broke down on air, sobbing as she begged the animal shelter to return the dog to her hairdresser.

"Today is a hard day for me. Today is bad. I am not capable of coming out and pretending to be funny & when things are going so terribly wrong right now," DeGeneres said.

Then the bubbly comedian launched into an emotional monologue.

"I feel totally responsible for it and I'm so sorry," she said on air. "I'm begging them to give that dog back to that family. I just want the family to have their dog. It's not their fault. It's my fault. I shouldn't have given the dog away. Just please give the dog back to those little girls."

'Can We Have Iggy?'

DeGeneres adopted Iggy from Mutts and Moms last month. She said that she spent $3,000 on the puppy to try to acclimate it to live with her cats.

But, DeGeneres said, "It was just too much energy and too rambunctious."

DeGeneres said her hairdresser's daughters, who already have a dog, wanted a puppy.

"They said, 'We love Iggy. Can we have Iggy?'" DeGeneres said.

Weeks later, people from Mutts and Moms came to the family's home claiming to be on an inspection, but instead they took Iggy back.

Police allowed Mutts and Moms to leave with Iggy because DeGeneres had technically violated her agreement with the agency.

"Well, I guess I signed a piece of paper that says if I can't keep Iggy it goes back to the rescue organization," DeGeneres said.

The girls, meanwhile, are heartbroken and want Iggy back.

More On-Air Messages

Marina Batkis, the owner of Mutts and Moms, says she's looking out for the best interests of the puppy.

"If Ellen wants to start her own rescue group then she can decide where the dogs go," Batkis said. "Who is she to say who is a good home and whose not? And who is she to say where I should place my animals and how I should do this? I don't tell her how to run her show."

Batkis' lawyer played a voice mail message for "Good Morning America" that he says is from a DeGeneres public relations representative.

The voice mail says: "We're filing a legal case against you. We're going to be contacting the media. This is not going to be good for your store or your organization."

Batkis says that because of the way she's been treated by DeGeneres, she absolutely has no intention of giving back the puppy.

In response, DeGeneres taped a message that will air later today on her show.

"This has become so insane. It's not even, it's just just the dog just needs to go to the family. It's like the fight should & not be about anything," she said. "It just needs to be in a good home. That's all you're supposed to do is put a dog in a loving home."

I agree Savannah. I like Ellen's humor, but I'm tired of celebrities acting like spoiled babies. People who devote their lives to helping animals, like Marina Batkis, don't deserve that bullying behavior from anyone. There are plenty of ways to help dogs, like contributing toward spay and neutering programs, or contributing to the Humane Society. I'm glad Batkis told her where to shove it.

Unfortunately, she is hurting rescue with this tirade. Our adoption contract specifies the same thing - in fact every reputable rescue I know of does. By signing the contract you are agreeing to certain stipulations, one of which is the dog must be returned to the rescue group if for any reason you cannot keep the dog. There are no exceptions. Some people don't seem to understand rescue and the lengths they go to and the precautions they take in placing a dog. It is irrelevant how much she spent training & neutering, et al - does she not realize the overall expense involved in rescue? We just spent several thousand dollars to save two parvo pups - the adoption fee remains the same regardless of the 'investment' in the dog. We love every dog that comes in. It is our responsibility to try and ensure the well being of the dog for life and we take that job very seriously. We don't just hand off a dog and hope for the best. Given she's rescued or adopted numerous animals, Ellen should know better.

DeGeneres Did Not Sign the Contract ...

...Fink said DeGeneres' partner, actress Portia de Rossi, signed the agreement. DeGeneres originally said on her show that she (DeGeneres) had signed it.

DeGeneres' publicist Kelly Bush confirmed De Rossi signed the agreement, although DeGeneres' name also was listed.

"She (Ellen) was wrong by not reading the agreement," Bush told the AP in a phone interview. "She thought she was doing a good thing. She's notorious for rescuing animals and finding them good homes. She found the dog a wonderful, wonderful home."

Fink asserted that DeGeneres and De Rossi breached the agreement.

"If you adopt a dog and you no longer want the dog, you can't unilaterally decide who you want to give the dog to," he said. "She's trying to tell a story to make herself look good."

This makes me angry - she is using her celebrity to bully these women who want nothing but to ensure that dogs are placed safely. One of their stated policies is that small dogs are not to be placed with young children - Degeneres ignored that rule.

(From the same article:)

...DeGeneres had said her hairdresser's daughters, ages 11 and 12, had bonded with Iggy and were heartbroken when the dog was taken away.

Fink said Moms and Mutts has a rule that families with children under 14 are not allowed to adopt small dogs.

"It's for the protection of the dog," he said....

Ellen DeGeneres says she's done talking about doggie dilemma

Ellen DeGeneres says she's done talking about the little doggie that couldn't go home, even though thousands of pooch lovers have gotten behind her tear-filled pleas for justice.

During a Wednesday taping of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," to be aired Thursday, DeGeneres told viewers she wouldn't speak again about her canine dilemma unless the dog, Iggy, was returned to DeGeneres' hairdresser and the woman's young daughters.

"If Iggy returns, we'll have Iggy on the show," she said in a transcript provided by the show.

The twisted tale began last month when DeGeneres and her partner adopted the cute, black Brussels Griffon mix terrier. When Iggy wasn't able to get along with DeGeneres' cats, the couple gave the dog to DeGeneres' hairdresser.

Mutts and Moms, the nonprofit dog-rescue organization that gave DeGeneres the dog, later took it back - setting off a firestorm of nasty e-mails and threats directed at the agency after DeGeneres shared the blow by blow with viewers on her show this week.

"Let me just say this, it's gotten out of hand," DeGeneres said on the segment to air Thursday. "I want nothing, nothing more than that dog returned to that family. But you don't resort to violence. So anybody out there, please stop that. Please don't threaten or do whatever."

The calls got so bad that Marina Batkis, co-owner of the dog rescue organization, said she had to close her business and stay home Wednesday, a day after DeGeneres broadcast a tearful, televised plea for the dog to be returned to her hairdresser and the woman's daughters.

"My life is being threatened. This is horrible," a tearful Batkis said outside her home.

"They have gotten thousands of e-mails," attorney Keith Fink told the television program "Inside Edition." "Most of them are hate e-mails threatening them with lynchings, bombings of their home."

One recording "Inside Edition" played had a male voice saying, "You Nazi, scum-sucking pigs. You're gonna pay dearly for stealing this dog from those little girls."

Batkis said DeGeneres' decision to give the dog away violated a written agreement her partner, actress Portia de Rossi, signed in which she agreed to return the dog to Mutts and Moms if the adoption didn't work out.

DeGeneres has acknowledged she erred but said her hairdresser and her family shouldn't be punished.

Batkis has refused to back down.

"If Ellen wants to place dogs and decide what's a good home, then she should start her own rescue group," she told "Inside Edition." "But I'm the one doing this and I know what I'm doing."

DeGeneres said several agencies had offered to provide the family another dog, even one that looked like Iggy.

"And unfortunately, Ruby, the little girl, doesn't want another dog, she wants Iggy," said DeGeneres on the show to air Thursday. "It's not a toy that's broken that you can replace. It's a dog."
