Memorial Day

Let's hope the cable shows remember what's really important this weekend. It isn't Rosie, it isn't Paris, it isn't Anna Nicole Smith and it sure as hell isn't the second anniversary of ONE missing person when there's thousands upon thousands of other families missing their loved ones.

The Fallen Soldier

Fallen Soldier All Alone
Fallen Soldier Far From Home.
Trickling Down His Face A Tear,
Forgetting How It Feels To Fear
Death And All It's Fate And Glory.
Now It's Here, No Need To Worry.

Fallen Soldier All Alone
Fallen Soldier Far From Home
He's One Of Those They'll All Forget;
The Life He Lived, The Goals He Set,
The Ones He Loved, The Ones Who Wait
To See His Nearly Forgotten Face.

Fallen Soldier All Alone
Fallen Soldier Far From Home
Now Breathing's Just A Waste Of Breath
And Living's Just A Waste Of Death
As He Searches For A New Address;
A Brand New Home Free Of Loneliness.

Fallen Soldier All Alone
Fallen Soldier Far From Home
Lying Motionless On The Ground,
The Battle Raging All Around.
For Now He Is Not All Alone.
This Fallen Soldier Is Welcomed Home.

Rolling Eyes ... and you forgot Lindsay Lohan who crashed her car days after
leaving rehab. She's now facing another DUI and this morning there's
info that she was in possession of cocaine.

Trash sells and it seems the american public demands it and hence every
time I tune in to cable news I'm barraged by numbskulls like Paris, Rosie,
Lindsay, Donald, Britney, Simon et al

Thank you Pro for re-focusing the attention where it deserves to be.

Thanks for the topic and links, Prolific.

Because of the "Amazing Grace" audio over, I think this is a more moving version:

“The True Meaning of Memorial Day” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wK0T4pVHP28&mode=related&search=

Also to commemorate Memorial Day, a video rendition of “The battle Hymn of the Republic” . Lyric: “Jesus died to make men holy, let us die to make men free, our god is marching on” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PAqKBr-swg&mode=related&search=

I searched but could not find a good video of the "Missing Man Formation" aerial memorial.

The missing man formation is an aerial flyover salute performed as part of a a funeral or memorial event: The aircraft fly low in a V-shape formation over the ceremony and then one executes an abrupt pull-up, while the rest of the formation continues in level flight until all aircraft are out of sight. Often the flight approaches from the south, preferably near sundown, and the one aircraft will suddenly pull up to the west, flying into the sunset. The abrupt pull up represents the soul rising to heaven, and is spectacular when done with an F-15, Tomcat or other jet aircraft that has the thrust to climb straight up.

From http://www.usmemorialday.org/

Quote:
Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication "To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead" (Source: Duke University's Historic American Sheet Music, 1850-1920). While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it's difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. It is more likely that it had many separate beginnings; each of those towns and every planned or spontaneous gathering of people to honor the war dead in the 1860's tapped into the general human need to honor our dead, each contributed honorably to the growing movement that culminated in Gen Logan giving his official proclamation in 1868. It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all.

"Arlington" as recorded by Trace Adkins ~

Quote:
I never thought that this is where i'd settle down,
I thought i'd die an old man back in my hometown,
They gave me this plot of land, me and some other men, for a job well done,
there's a big white house sits on a hill just up the road,
the man inside he cried the day they brought me home,
they folded up a flag and told my mom and dad, we're proud of your son

Chorus:
And I'm proud to be on this peaceful peice of property,
I'm on sacred ground and i'm in the best of company,
I'm thankful for those things i've done,
I can rest in peice, I'm one of the chosen ones, I made it to Arlington

I remember daddy brought me here when i was eight,
we searched all day to find out where my granddad lay,
and when we finally found that cross,
he said, "son this is what it cost to keep us free" Now here i am,
a thousand stones away from him,
he reconized me on the first day i came in,
and it gave me a chill when he clicked his heels, and saluted me.

(Repeat Chorus)

and everytime i hear twenty-one guns,
i know they brought another hero home to is

we're thankful for those thankful for the things we've done,
we can rest in peace, 'cause we are the chosen ones,
we made it to arlington, yea dust to dust,
don't cry for us,w e made it to arlington

That is really moving, apodixis, Amazing Grace always reduces me to tears. All of these videos reduce me to tears, it feels so personal to me having a son that served in Iraq . Thank God he came home safe. So many other familes are not as fortunate and my heart just breaks for all of them.

In Holland we have Whitsunday. The day Christians celebrate the fact that the Holy Spirit entered our souls, after Jesus descended into Heaven.

On May 4th, we had our Memorial Day.

To the Troops ou there I say: God Bless you!
To those who came home I say: God Bless you!
To the families who lost a loved one I say: God Bless you!

To those who never went I say: take care of those injured over there and take care of the families who lost their loved ones over there and God will Bless you!

November 11 in Canada is Remembrance Day where we
remember and honour all those who served bravely and valiantly
in all armed conflicts around the World.

The poem In Flanders Field is synonymous with canadians'
honouring of all fallen soldiers. I reproduce it here as I find it
universal in its appeal.

The events that inspired the writing of this poem can be found here:
http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/flanders.htm

IN FLANDERS FIELDS
by John McCrae, May 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep,
though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

The National Memorial Day Concert’s most moving tribute tonight was from the “Victory at Sea” Documentary.

The most memorable part of that documentary was this video segment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AJ2CgvBv80 about the battle between pilots who want to die and gunners who want to live.

This same battle is being fought today with the Jihadis. But it is inevitable that those who value life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness will prevail over those who have nothing to offer other than death.

American Soldier by Toby Keith/Chuck Cannon
I’m just tryin’ to be a father, raise a daughter and a son
Be a lover to their mother, everythin’ to everyone
Up and at ‘em bright and early, I’m all business in my suit
Yeah I’m dressed up for success, from my head down to my boots
I don’t do it for money, there’s bills I that I can’t pay
I don’t do it for the glory, I just do it anyway
Providing for our future’s, my responsibility
Yeah I’m real good under pressure, being all that I can be
And I can’t call in sick on Mondays when the weekend’s been too strong
I just work straight through the holidays, and sometimes all night long
You can bet that I stand ready, when the wolf growls at the door
Hey I’m solid, hey I’m steady, hey I’m true down to the core.

And I will always do my duty no matter what the price
I’ve counted up the cost, I know the sacrifice
Oh and I don’t want to die for you, but if dyin’s asked of me
I’ll bear that cross with honor, cause freedom don’t come free.

I’m an American Soldier an American
Beside my brothers and my sisters, I will proudly take a stand
When liberty’s in jeopardy, I will always do what’s right

I’m out here on the front lines, sleep in peace tonight
American Soldier, I’m and American, Soldier.

An American Soldier an American
Beside my brothers and my sisters, I will proudly take a stand
When liberty’s in jeopardy, I will always do what’s right
I’m out here on the front lines, sleep in peace tonight
American Soldier, I’m and American, an American, an American, Soldier.

Letters From Home by John Michael Montgomery

My Dear Son, it is almost June,
I hope this letter catches up to you, and finds you well
Its been dry but they’re calling for rain,
And everything's the same ol’ same in Johnsonville
Your stubborn 'ol Daddy ain’t said too much,
But I’m sure you know he sends his love,
And she goes on,
In a letter from home

I hold it up and show my buddies,
Like we ain’t scared and our boots ain’t muddy, and they all laugh,
Like there’s something funny bout’ the way I talk,
When I say: "Mama sends her best y’all"
I fold it up an' put it in my shirt,
Pick up my gun an' get back to work
An' it keeps me driving me on,
Waiting on letters from home

My Dearest Love, its almost dawn
I’ve been lying here all night long wondering where you might be
I saw your Mama and I showed her the ring
Man on the television said something so I couldn’t sleep
But I’ll be all right, I’m just missing you
An' this is me kissing you
XX’s and OO’s,
In a letter from home

I hold it up and show my buddies,
Like we ain’t scared and our boots ain’t muddy, and they all laugh,
'Cause she calls me "Honey", but they take it hard,
'Cause I don’t read the good parts
I fold it up an' put it in my shirt,
Pick up my gun an' get back to work
An' it keeps me driving me on,
Waiting on letters from home

Dear Son, I know I ain’t written,
But sittin' here tonight, alone in the kitchen, it occurs to me,
I might not have said, so I’ll say it now
Son, you make me proud

I hold it up and show my buddies,
Like we ain’t scared and our boots ain’t muddy, but no one laughs,
'Cause there ain’t nothing funny when a soldier cries
An' I just wipe me eyes
I fold it up an' put it in my shirt,
Pick up my gun an' get back to work
An' it keeps me driving me on,
Waiting on letters from home
